Dreamer
08-13-06

This is the story of a Dreamer,
Who aspired to grow wings and fly.
And the story of a Nightmare,
In whom the Dreamer died.
I met the Dreamer first.
His dreams were like mine.
Though, at first, I hated him,
We became friends over time.

Dreamer, Dreamer, dance at night.
Share with me your dreams.
For now, at least, the Nightmare snores.
Dreamer, Dreamer, dream with me.

He became a trusted friend,
In whom I could confide.
Both of us had problems,
From the other could not hide.
I became his iron anchor,
Support he could rely on.
In return he was my shield.
A shoulder I could cry on.

Dreamer, Dreamer, dance at night.
Share with me your dreams.
For now, at least, the Nightmare snores.
Dreamer, Dreamer, dream with me.

Friendship grew to something more,
What I thought for sure was love.
Our eventual life together
Was something that I dreamed of.
As I look back, I realize now,
Just how foolish that dream was.
A wiser heart recognizes
The thing I mistook for love.

Dreamer, Dreamer, dance at night.
Share with me your dreams.
For now, at least, the Nightmare snores.
Dreamer, Dreamer, dream with me.

But in the time we loved each other,
We were happy as could be.
I took pride in the thought
Of someone who wanted only me.
Still, it came to an end,
As all good things tend to do.
Yet we remained close friends.
That, at least, stayed true.

Dreamer, Dreamer, dance at night.
Share with me your dreams.
For now, at least, the Nightmare snores.
Dreamer, Dreamer, dream with me.

Though we remained close,
We both began to change.
Our views on life warped,
Like pictures ruined by rain.
My Dreamer began to falter.
He began to act so strange.
The things he said scared me.
Slowly, my Dreamer went away.

Dreamer, Dreamer, his sleep is troubled,
And he turns his back on sanity.
The Nightmare within him stirs and growls.
My Dreamer is leaving me...

The Dreamer I once knew,
Had hidden from my sight.
I thought that I could help him
By dragging him back to the light.
But he had changed so much,
Always using words so harsh.
They weren’t directed at me,
But they echoed in my heart.

Dreamer, Dreamer, his sleep is troubled,
And he turns his back on sanity.
The Nightmare within him stirs and growls.
My Dreamer is leaving me...

He told me what he thought
About the issues in the world.
I simply sat and listened
As the Nightmare’s tongue uncurled.
Some of his words scared me,
But not because I thought them true.
I was scared for his sake,
And for what I thought he might do.

Dreamer, Dreamer, his sleep is troubled,
And he turns his back on sanity.
The Nightmare within him stirs and growls.
My Dreamer is leaving me...

I came to hate the Nightmare,
And I tried to stay away.
But I worried for my Dreamer.
I prayed that he’d come back someday.
But every time we spoke,
And I looked into his eyes,
I saw not the Dreamer I once knew,
But the Nightmare I despise.

Dreamer, Dreamer, sleeps no more,
The Nightmare is all I see.
Still, I have hope my Dreamer lives.
Dreamer, Dreamer, come back to me.

Finally, I told him my concerns,
How worried I was for him.
I said something that he hated,
And received violence in return.
He told me what had happened,
The reason he had changed.
I was not sure I believed him,
Because it sounded so deranged.

Dreamer, Dreamer, sleeps no more,
The Nightmare is all I see.
Still, I have hope my Dreamer lives.
Dreamer, Dreamer, come back to me.

We began to argue,
And we made each other mad.
I had never had a fight
That made me feel so bad.
Angry words were traded,
Some things I now regret.
Such awful things we said,
None of it can I forget.

Dreamer, Dreamer, sleeps no more.
The Nightmare is all I see.
Still, I have hope my Dreamer lives.
Dreamer, Dreamer, come back to me.

The last time that we spoke,
I was practically told
To never speak to him again.
Those words made my heart go cold.
When I stopped being angry,
Long enough to think it through,
I realized my Dreamer died.
He was no longer who I knew.

Dreamer, Dreamer, sleeps no more,
The Nightmare is all I see.
My hope is gone; my Dreamer gone.
Dreamer, Dreamer, come back to me.

I thought about what he had said,
The reasons that he gave.
His speech sounded like babble,
Like a man who rants and raves.
But I knew my Dreamer wouldn’t lie,
About such things to me.
Could it be true, the things he said?
Or has guilt finally got me?

Dreamer, Dreamer, sleeps no more,
The Nightmare is all I see.
My hope is gone; my Dreamer gone.
Dreamer, Dreamer, come back to me.

Someday in the future,
Be it far, or be it near.
I shall speak with him again,
And face my final fear.
What will I see when I meet him?
What will he say to me?
What will I hear from his mouth?
In his eyes, what will I see?

Dreamer, Dreamer, sleeps no more,
The Nightmare is all I see.
My hope is gone; my Dreamer gone.
Dreamer, Dreamer, come back to me.

Will I see my Dreamer,
Come back from the dead?
Or will I gaze upon the Nightmare,
Who killed my Dreamer in his head?
Either way, I hope,
That my dreamer finds hie peace.
That the Nightmare has been sated,
And that my Dreamer finally sleeps...

Dreamer, Dreamer, sleep again.
Keep dreaming all your dreams.
Please say the Nightmare has not won.
Dreamer, Dreamer, come back to me!
