Rumors

Or: why you should keep your secrets

Author's Note - Um. Some weird short story that I wrote. Because I just got this crazy idea about a rumor that gets bigger and bigger and everything. I'm having fun writing short stories. Don't worry, Not My Type is coming. Autumn is coming too, a lot slower than I'd like...I haven't even got a full page written, so...

“If I tell you, will you promise not to tell anyone?” I asked her. Lillian nodded, eager to hear what I had to say

“Well…I sort of think that I might have a crush on Jake Trinity,” I told her, prepared for laughter.

“Oh, him? He’s a hottie!” She exclaimed, “I promise I won’t tell anyone.” I hoped she was telling the truth.

“So, I heard that you have a crush on Jake Trinity,” Gretchen greeted me when I got into the passenger seat of her car for the drive to school. I rolled my eyes. Lillian had obviously not kept my secret.

“I might,” I answered. Though Gretchen was my cousin, she wasn’t on the top of my list of People I Can Tell Secrets To (not that I’d ever made such a list).

“Man, he is hot,” Gretchen said, “I wouldn’t mind going out with him!” She added. Her sister, Freda, sighed from the back seat.

“Well, do you promise not to say anything to anyone?” I asked – more like pleaded – Gretchen.

“I promise,” she agreed.

“You’re going out with Jake Trinity?!” Wynn exclaimed as I sat down next to her in first period Physics.

“Definitely not,” I told her, glad that Jake hadn’t been in the room to hear her, “where’d you get your information?” I asked.

“Your cousin,” she said, as though that meant everything was true.

“Gretchen?” I asked, “She promised not to say anything!”

“Not Gretchen, Freda. So it is true then?” Wynn asked, looking intrigued. I groaned.

“It’s not true. I am not going out with Jake Trinity,” I explained.

“I heard my name,” Jake said, sliding into the seat next to me. He looked from Wynn to me eagerly. I sighed to myself.

“Maybe you can clear things up. You and I are not dating, are we?” I asked Jake. He gave me a slightly confused look.

“No, we aren’t,” he confirmed. And then he winked at me. What was that for, I wondered.

“So, you’re having a secret relationship with Jake Trinity and you didn’t bother to tell me?” Sam asked in second period English.

“No, I’m not,” I explained, “Wynn is just confused with her information,” I added. Sam just grinned.

“There’s no reason for you to keep it a secret from your best friend!” Sam said, raising her eyebrows at me. Why did I have the feeling that today wasn’t going to be a good one?

“I am NOT having a secret relationship with Jake Trinity. I am not dating him at all! I don’t have a crush on him! I don’t write him love poems or whatever, so could we drop it?” I shouted, managing to grab the attention of the entire class. Shit.

“Is it true that you wrote Jake a …”

“Love poem? No, not true,” I replied. The question-asker, Asher, looked slightly disappointed.

“Well, I heard …”

“I know what you heard. None of it is true,” I answered, wishing this day would end already.

“So you’re not engaged to him then?” Asher asked. I looked up and there was the tiniest hint of a smile on his face.

“Engaged? Hell no!” I exclaimed.

“If you say so,” Asher conceded, but I wasn’t left feeling much better.

“Are you seriously pregnant?” Seth asked when I sat down at my usual desk in the Latin room. The other five members turned to look at me for my response to his question.

“Pregnant? Where the hell would you get that idea?” I asked, incredulous.

“Well, isn’t that why you and Jake are getting married? Because it’s his baby?” Seth asked.

“Hole shit, you’re having Jake Trinity’s baby?” Edgar asked. I rubbed my temples. Who came up with this shit? I was going to murder Lillian…and Gretchen, Wynn, Sam, Asher, and anyone else I could get my hands on.

“Jake and I are not engaged, I’m not having his baby, we’re not even dating,” I exclaimed.

“You sure about that?” Jenna asked, “you don’t have to keep it a secret anyone. Everyone knows,” yeah, so I guessed.

Upon walking into the cafeteria, I felt all eyes on me, whispers all around me. Ignoring them, I walked up to the lunch line, right behind Jake.

“Hey,” he said with a grin. I couldn’t help loving that grin, even if giving it to me would spark more rumors.

“Hey,” I replied.

“Heard the rumors?” he asked. I rolled my eyes.

“You mean that we’re engaged because I’m having your baby?” I asked him, somehow not fazed by the way we were casually talking about it.

“Oh, is that all? I heard that we’re eloping tonight to Vegas and that you’re having twins,” he correct, amused.

“Really? Well to be honest, I’m not a big fan of Las Vegas. Maybe we should try someplace closer, like New York,” I suggested, grinning, “but it’s so stupid for them to come up with all these ideas of what’s going on between us if they don’t have any proof,” I added.

“Well, maybe we should give them some proof,” he said, and without warning pressed his mouth – and body – to mine. Once the shock wore off, I kissed him back, wrapping my arms around his neck, letting him slide his tongue in my mouth.

“Uh, excuse me,” Ms. Orland, the monitor, interrupted, “married or not, PDA isn’t allowed,” she added. I turned to Jake. He grinned at me, and then grabbed my hand and we left the cafeteria, into the empty hallway.

“Is this…are we…?” I asked, still a little breathless, both from the kiss and the running.

“Yeah,” Jake answered with a grin and another kiss.

So, um, that’s why rumors suck…okay…um, maybe that wasn’t the best example…
