CHAPTER FOUR

Maybe I need fantasy
Life of chasing butterfly” Weezer, Butterfly

I could only watch as the guy went straight over to Butterfly’s table and began to pester her. At least it looked as though he was pestering her – from the expression on her face, she looked quite… bored. But she seemed to know him and be close to him. Were they together? Girlfriend and boyfriend? I didn’t even want to think about it… Was it wishful thinking that she had seemed interested in me? Obviously… this guy seemed to be all over her. I glanced up from the counter as they were leaving, and she didn’t even look back at me. I had to wonder if I would ever see her again.

“Earth to Logan… Logan are you there?”

I turned back to the guy who was addressing me and frowned slightly. How long had I been completely ignoring him? I gave one last glance at the street outside of the shop, watching as the little blonde girl walked away with the guy. He could hurt her so easily… was she aware of that?

“For god’s sake Logan… snap out of it!”

I blinked and quickly turned back to the guy, shaking my head apologetically. “Sorry… I’ve been pretty out of it all day.”

“No you haven’t. You’ve been out of it since that blonde girl walked into the coffee shop.”

He was right. I sighed and handed the next customer their drink. The guy was a regular here… actually, he was a regular around me – one of my closest friends. He was always trying to get me interested in this girl or that girl, perhaps me being so “out of it” over this girl would please him? For some reason though, he was frowning at me.

“Her boyfriend looks messy. You should probably stay away from her.”

The anger I felt was irrational, I know. He was only trying to look out for me, but I couldn’t help it. Why should he care whether or not I stayed away from her? In fact, she’d probably never come into this coffee shop again – she was only being polite earlier, she probably despised me. Alright, perhaps that was too strong a word…

“You’re always trying to get me to get together with a girl, Tom – why not her?”

“Like I said, her boyfriend looks messy. I don’t really want to have to scrape you off the pavement because of him.”

Despite my anger, I smiled. Tom never seemed to have any trouble with the girls – with his platinum blonde hair and large blue eyes; he was always the centre of attention wherever he went. A lot of the girls I’d dated had done it mostly just to please him. Most of them had ended up with him afterwards, actually. I couldn’t blame him though; I never really tried with the women. None of them seemed quite… right. Maybe I was just being silly.

“Hey… Logan. I’ve gone an invite to this party that’s going on, at this rather large house. It might be a way to get your mind off her. There’s gonna be lots of girls there…”

I sighed. Maybe Tom was right… maybe I just needed someone to be interested in for a while. It didn’t exactly need to be long term, hell I could have a one night stand, right?

I wasn’t actually sure if I could. One night stands weren’t exactly my specialty – neither were multiple night stands really. I grabbed a cup and began to make another coffee, thinking over Tom’s suggestion as I did so. Would it be so bad to just… go to a party?

When the cup of coffee was finished, I’d made my decision.

“Sure. I’ll go.”
