“I still can’t believe your leaving me here all by myself, it’s going to be so sad without you here!” I heard being yelled in my ear as I was being hugged to death by my best friend ever, Sara. Sara had been my first friend at Moors boarding School when I came here in the sixth grade; she was also my roommate through the five years I went here.
“I’ll miss you too Sara, I’d rather stay here instead of going back to that hell hold, and you know that. It won’t be that bad, it’s only a couple hours away anyways so we can always come see each other on weekends.” I hugged her back.
“Well we be better finish packing then,” she said as she pulled away, not looking one bit happy about this. Well I’m not happy either; who would be, having to leave all your friends behind and having to go back to hell. Sara began to fill the box closest to her with the cloths from my closet.
I began to fill a box with my other personal possession, while beginning to think of how it was going to be like going back home. I haven’t seen any of my family since I left for boarding school, not even for Christmas break. I was never much of a family person when I was back home, but I never figured they’d ever send me away cause I was so different from the other people in town. It was more like they were embarrassed to say I was even part of their family. So I’d been a slightly pudgy child with untamable hair and glasses… ok I looked like the worlds biggest nerd, but that wasn’t the point. Now I was 5”5’, my hair was now straight and a reddish blonde that when down to a little above my waist, I’d grown out of my once pudgy appearance and was now a size 3, and I’ve gotten rid of my glasses and gotten contacts.
“Well that’s the last of it,” Sara said slightly depressed as she went to the phone to call a few of are friends to help us pack them down to my car. “I still can’t believe your leaving, after all we’ve been through. What will happen to the volleyball team now that your gone, and…”
“They’ll be fine without me don’t worry so much, and plus you wont miss me to much I’ll come see you ever other weekend, and call you every time I can,” just as I said that we heard a knock at the door, “come on in!” I yelled as Jason, Alex, and Jeff walked in; they were going to help us move my stuff to my car.
After about twenty minutes all my boxes were in the back of my car, and some in the back of Alex’s truck because they were going to fallow me there and help me unpack my stuff when I got home. I went and said bye to all my close friends, and after a few tears and promises we all piled into the two vehicles, me and Sara in my car and the guys in the truck, and started heading off for the two-hour drive back to my hometown.
“Oh come one, it doesn’t look to bad here,” Jason said trying to cheer me up as he walked up to us, putting his arm around both Sara and I, “shall we go in then.”
I lead the walk to the door and opened it, the guys and Sara fallowing me quietly. “Mom, Dad I’m home!” I yelled as I shut the door after everyone came in.
Mom was the first one to see me as she walked out of the kitchen with an apron tied around her waist, “Riley is that you?” she asked as she looked me up and down with a smile on her face. Dad finally showed up from his office and smiled as my brother, who was also my twin, Matt came downstairs.
“Well look what the cat dragged in,” Matt said while they all looked at me, also smiling to himself. I’d never really gotten along with Matt, or anyone in my family for that matter, so I just glared back at him.
“Well hunny are you going to introduce us to your friends behind you?” she asked as she stared at all of them.
“Oh yeah, everyone these are some of my friends Sara, Jason, Alex, and Jeff. You guys this is my family.” I said as fast as I could while I began to drag them upstairs, “well we’re going to go up to my room and start unpacking my stuff so um bye,” they all fallowed behind me as my family stared at are retreating backs.
We walked into my room, which was completely bare, just hardwood floors and white walls. It was a large room compared to the room me and Sara had been sharing. “So you guys, I say we should paint this beast before anything what do you say?” I asked everyone. Everyone just nodded, “so what color?”
“Red”
“Blue”
“Purple”
“Green”
“Well thanks you guys that really helps….” I said sarcastically as I looked around, “ how about purple and blue, well make it with big strips or something?”
“Sounds good.” Everyone said at the same time.
“Sweet, well then lets go get some paint after we pile everything out of my car so we can all fit.”
When we got into the house Matt gave us weird looks as we walked up the stairs laughing as Jeff rubbed his head, where Sara had hit him earlier before. We had finally made it up the stair and to my room, Alex dropping me to the floor the second we made it there.
After setting up old sheets we were allowed to use to make sure no paint got on the floors, we set the tape up so we’d make the stripes as straights possible and began to paint.
“Me and Sara are so going to finish are wall before you guys do,” Jason bragged as we all began to paint the walls. We’d split into teams, Sara and Jason verses Jeff and me as Alex sat there and was the “referee”. I personally thought he was just being a lazy ass.
“Riley, you guys better hurry your ass up if you’re going to win,” Alex said as he watch us all paint. Angrily I took my roller and put it onto his face, making a big line of blue, “hey watch it!”
Smiling I turned around only to feel something wet on my back “oops slipped,” Sara said sarcastically.
Jason then went and got paint on Sara’s cheek, and this began a big paint war. By the time we were all done with painting my room we were covered in paint, lying in a pile on the floor, laughing uncontrollably.
Looking at the time I decided that it was about time to start to move things into my room and set everything up. This took nearly 2 hours, and a few injuries, but come on we all new that was coming. Sara had a good sized bump on her head and her foot was sure to be bruised by tomorrow, Jason and tones of place in which were going to bruise and long with Alex, and Jeff was now walking with a slight limp from when I dropped a box of cds on his foot… twice. As for me, well my arm was throbbing in pain from when Jason pushed me into a wall, and then my bed, and then into Sara. I also had a scratch from something… I still don’t know what though.
“Well it’s already 7:30, and if we want to make it back before curfew we’d better leave now,” Jeff said as he got up and also pulling me up from the floor.
“Yeah I guess your right,” I said as we all walked downstairs, still covered what was now dry paint. “Hey guys can I get a couple more pictures first?”
“Heck yeah!” they all yelled.
“I’ll have my dad take a group picture for us.” I said as I spotted him in his office. He stood up and I jumped back onto Alex’s back. After a few pictures we walked outside and to their truck.
“Wait, Riley, you have to close your eyes for a second ok?” Sara said as she reached into the truck, with Jason covering my eyes. After a few seconds he moved his hand. In front of me were a giant blue photo album, and a couple of shoeboxes.
“You’ve been with us forever Riley and we thought we’d give you something to remember us all,” Sara said through tears.
“Yeah, it’s not going to be the same without you, who are we going to pick on now?” Alex said while ruffling my hair.
“We’ll pick on you now,” both Jason and Jeff said while whacking Alex in the back of the head.
“Thanks so much you guys,” I said as tears filled my eyes. We all hugged and they climbed into the car, “don’t forget to call me when you get home so I know you got home alright, okay?”
“Alright we will, and don’t forget to send some pictures of today to me, and call me, and email!” Sara yelled as Jason began to back out of the driveway.
They all yelled bye to me and I waved. As I watch them drive down the deserted road I began to cry. There went my best friends, my real family.
My mom walked in, looking around my now decorated room. “Hi hunny, dinner will be done in about 30 minutes so you might want to go wash that pain off of your face and change clothes,” she said smiling.
I got up and looked into the mirror, “yeah that might be a good idea,” I said while walking to my closet and grabbed a pair of jeans and a green tee-shirt, then walked into my bathroom, which was connected to my room. Mom soon walked out of the room closing the door behind her.
Turning on my cd player, I started the shower and striped off my now ruined clothes and quickly got in. The water hit my exhausted body as I slowly began to scrub the dry paint off of my body and listened to the music blaring through my speakers.
“So listen up. (So listen up)
I worked in daylight feeding fashion to housewives.
For just this once (For just this once)
I'll take my chances on truck stops and state lines.
Go ahead and tell them again,
We’ll I think that I know that they won’t remember,
Go ahead and tell them twice,
Yeah twice is nice but three times is just right.
Hey hey now we’re almost home,
I’m missing you to death, but it’s all for the best I know,
Hey hey we’re not far from home,
I’ve got my pride and I’ll let you sleep tonight.
So listen up. (So listen up)
My old friends have been dropping like houseflies.
The smoking gun still sits in my pocket and I know how to use it.
Go ahead and tell them again.
Well I think that I know that I won't forgive them
For turning their backs when we started to get busy.
Yeah twice is fine, but three times is just right.
Hey, hey now we're almost home.
I'm missing you to death, but it's all for the best, I know.
Hey, hey we're not far from home.
I've got my pride, and I'll let you sleep tonight.
Hey, hey now we're almost home.
I'm missing you to death, missing you to death.
Oh...Hey, hey we're not far from home.
I'll swallow my pride and push back my seat tonight.
I'm on my feet...(This isn't like us anyway)
I'm running...
Our time is almost,
Our time is almost here.(This isn't like us anyway)”
Getting out of the shower I quickly pulled on my clothes, dried my hair, and put on a little mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, and lip-gloss. Glancing at myself in the mirror one last time I walked out and into the living room after grabbing my cell phone. Sitting on the couch I began flipping through the channels, looking for something to watch. After about five minutes I settled on spongebob. I know it’s a kids so but I love it. That’s just a little weird isn’t it, oh well.
A few minutes later mom called us all to the table to eat. Turning off the t.v. I got up and headed for the kitchen table and sat down. After everyone was seated and served we began to eat in an awkward silence. Why was everyone looking at me like that? Did I have something in my teeth? Maybe they’re not even my real family, but aliens and my real family was abducted and is now being tortured to death… sweet.
“So Riley, what have you been up to? How have you been doing at school?” mom asked trying to break the ice.
“I’ve been doing just fine, some of the volleyball team was mad I left before the season started, but they’ll deal,” I stated my eyes not leaving my plate. Talking to your family shouldn’t be this weird, maybe I was adopted, yeah that’s got to be the answer. That would surely explain a lot.
“Oh you were on the volleyball team?”
No I just like saying I am, idiots. Oh well I might as well attempt to be polite, “yeah I was,”
“Are you going to try out for this year?”
“Probably not, I really only played cause a lot of my friends played.”
“Oh I see.”
After that dad began to talk to Matt about soccer, mom joining in at times. I think I’ll just stay quiet through the rest of the dinner and hopefully the rest of my life… maybe if I do they’ll send me back.
Dinner finally ended and I went back into the living room and began watching more tv. I was sort of zoning out. My first day of school would be Monday, that gave me one more day to myself before having to see the people I despised the most. Ever since I was little everyone had made my life a living hell, even Matt teased me. I’d been teased about my weight so much that every time I would walk down the halls someone would say something obscene to me. I only had one friend, Sam, who was never really picked on; people always wondered why she hung out with me when she could have been friends with anyone she wanted. That’s what I liked about Sam, she was true to herself and would rather hang out with someone who wasn’t stuck up or bitchy. After I moved though I haven’t heard from her since, and I highly doubt she would recognize me, I didn’t even really recognize me sometimes.
My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of my cell phone going off. I looked down to see it was Sara. “Hello”
“Hey, we made it back, and just before curfew.”
“That’s great, I’m glade you guys made it.”
“Of course, so how’s the family from hell?”
“Nothing bad has happened yet, they asked about school and if I was going to be on the volleyball team, I said no though cause I could never play with anyone other then you guys. I’m going to miss you so much”
“Oh come on you should at least try out, it would be good for you.”
Yeah that’s what you think, not going to happen though, “Maybe I’ll just join cross country when that starts or tennis, something a little more independent, so I don’t have to deal with anyone.”
“You’re going to have to make new friends eventually Hun, but hey I’m going to have to go, love ya”
“Ok love you too bye,” I hung up and began to walk upstairs and into my room. After collapsing on my bed I stared at the ceiling and no more then a minute later I fell into a restless sleep.
Well I’m not sure I’ll finish this or not, just a couple chapters, most people usually don’t read my stories so we’ll just see what happens. Anywho review and tell me what you think thanks.
