black rose, white rose

a rose lies on a cold stone bench
a dark rose, a black rose
who left it there?
and who is it for?

as the rain starts to fall
the petals are beaten
they're soaked and they're tired
it won't live much longer

a girl walks by
letting the rain drench her
and picks up the rose
careful not to break it

she takes it home
and cares for it
in a glass on her dresser
where it will stay forever

she walks by that bench
only when it rains
but nothing new comes
as the black rose withers
waiting for a companion

finally, there is another
but the sun is shining
and this rose is white
still, she takes it home

the white rose goes into the glass
its stem crossing over the other
as they wait for more
but they are the only ones

the girl waits and watches
to see who leaves the roses
but no one comes
not in the sun or rain

she will always wonder
who left those two roses?
and who were they for?
were they for her?
