Chapter 1

Erich stepped out of his black, gleaming Porsche and breathed in the crisp, cool air. He slung his bag over his shoulder and slammed his door shut. The big glass door of the school in front of him sparkled in the sunlight.

A sharp pain flashed across Erich’s temples and he moaned in pain. The pain didn’t fade away like usual. It lingered in his head instead, thumping every now and then just to annoy the shit out of Erich. He didn’t understand what was going on in his head. Erich was a very healthy person, good in sports and his academics, but major headaches and killer migraines seemed to circle around him nowadays.

The glass door seemed much more heavier than usual and Erich had to use all strength just to get it to open wide enough for him to stumble through. The hallway in front of him swam in and out of focus as the door shut off the air from the outside. The hallway settled back to where it was supposed to be and Erich walked forward hurriedly while cold sweat trickled down his forehead.

Erich met his friends who were gathering in front of his locker as usual and gave them a watery smile.

“Hey, Erich,” greeted the African-American girl on Erich’s right. Her braided black hair trailed passed her shoulders reflecting the sunlight filtering through from the windows. Her hazel eyes twinkled with mischief as usual.

“Hey, Dahmina,” said Erich in return. His another best friend, Nathan, punched him in the arm playfully instead.

Two pale, slender arms slid around Erich’s waist from behind and hugged him. A girl with straight brown hair and streaks of white blonde rested her head on Erich’s broad shoulder.

“Good morning, cutie,” cooed the girl.

“Good morning to you too, Bree,” said Erich in return. Bree was the hottest chick in their school and Erich’s girlfriend.

“You are sweating heavily, are you alright?” asked Bree while running her hand through Erich’s short blonde hair before planting a kiss on his tanned neck.

Erich turned around and kissed Bree solidly on the lips. Just then, the stupid bell rang above them, disrupting the PDA between the two lovebirds.

“I’m perfectly fine,” lied Erich. He was a little out of breath and the world had started to spin again. He only told Bree he was fine because he didn’t want Bree to worry.

The group moved towards their homeroom, which was situated at the other end of the corridor, with Erich clinging onto Bree slightly for support.

The wooden door opened and closed and a tall, balding man stepped into view. Mr. Klinsmann was their form tutor and a pathetically short man, but as scary as a tiger on a rampage.

Mr. Klinsmann slammed his stack of books onto his table, which got the whole class’s attention. He sat down on his chair before ticking the names of the students who were present.

Erich’s place was hot, boilingly hot, and beads of sweat continued to slide down his flawlessly smooth skin. This did not help to subdue his painful migraine. The class slid in and out of focus and Erich looked away from his colourful classroom.

Erich’s seat was at the side of the classroom, beside the closed windows and flowering shrubs. He looked out of the dusty windows and a sparkling turquoise ocean greeted his sight. A flock of seagulls fly aimlessly over the ocean while fluffy white clouds donned the forget-me-not blue sky.

The sparkling ocean seemed to make his migraine even worse as Erich clutched the sides of his head and groaned.

“Are you really sure you are alright?” asked a concerned Bree who was sitting beside Erich and gossiping away with her usual noisy friends.

“I’m fine, just don’t talk to me,” snapped Erich unintentionally. He didn’t have the strength to apologize once the words left his mouth so he simply close his eyes and let the welcoming darkness comfort him.

Someone was shaking Erich, forcing him out of his sanctuary.

"What?” Erich murmured groggily. His mind felt like someone had just wrapped it with a lot of wet cotton, but even that did not hide his pounding migraine.

“Time to go to the Chemistry lab now,” said Dahmina with a smile on her lips. With a loud groan, Erich stood up and swayed on his feet. He flung his hands out to steady himself but his hands passed through thin air instead. Erich watched helplessly as the floor started to rush up towards his face. Nathan’s tattooed arms grabbed Erich before he fell flat on his face.

“Dude, what happened to you? You looked as if someone had knocked your head against the wall the whole night!” said Nathan while looking at Erich closely. “Maybe you should go back home and rest.”

“No,” Erich muttered weakly. The pounding had intensified and it seemed to affect his eyesight somehow. “I’m fine. Where’s Bree?”

“I don’t know. She stormed off looking quite pissed,” said Dahmina with a shrug. The trio moved off towards the Chemistry department with Erich being supported by his two best friends.

Erich clenched his fists tightly as the strength of the migraine intensified once more. Dahmina, Erich and Nathan were sitting under a huge tree during lunch time and trying to keep away from the other loud and annoying students.

A group of giggling girls passed in from of the three, with Bree being surrounded by her usual throng of admirers. She walked passed Erich with her back straight without even acknowledging his existence.

Erich watched Bree walked by sadly. He considered chasing after his girlfriend but as his temple gave another particularly nasty throb, he instantly dismissed the idea and leaned against the tree trunk with an exasperated sigh.

Erich retched again, bringing out the coffee and bacon he ate that morning. He clutched the side of the toilet bowl tightly until his knuckles turned white. Beads of sweat continued to trail down his now-deathly-pale face. Erich could have sworn stars dancing on top of his head.

He felt so cold and yet so hot at the same time. The inside of him was shivering non-stop but the outside of him felt like someone had just stuck him into an oven, trying to bake him alive. It was a weird and shitty feeling really.

Erich gasped for breath as he retched again, but bringing out nothing this time - his stomach is already empty with nothing for him to puke anymore. His inside hurt a lot. The small and stifling cubicle seemed to swim around and around while Erich tried desperately to stop himself from falling head-first into the puke-filled toilet bowl.

After squatting pathetically on the floor for a long time, Erich wiped his mouth with some tissue paper before flushing the toilet. His legs felt like made up of jelly and seemed to refuse his command as he opened the door and struggled towards the basin. It was situated at the far side of the dirty toilet and the distance made Erich wished he could just fly there.

The cooling liquid trickled passed Erich’s hands and he splashed some of the wonderful liquid onto his face and felt the water cool him for a while. Erich raised his head and stared at his refection on the mirror.

A seventeen-year-old boy stared back at him. Erich’s sandy blonde hair was stuck to his forehead while his usual twinkling, silvery-blue eyes were misted with pain; the tanned healthy skin was a shade of sickly white. Erich grimaced at what he saw in the reflection and turned around before walking unsteadily towards the door, determined to go back home and sleep for as long as he could.
