Chapter 2
What the hell is happening to me? thought Erich as he laid on his bed. His migraine still continued to rage inside his head. Erich shut his eyes tight as his head gave a particularly nasty throb. The migraine seemed to intensify as each second passed by and right now, his head felt like it was going to explode.
Nathan had sent Erich home earlier while Dahmina was going to drive his car back to his adoptive parents’ mansion after school. Erich’s parents had dies mysteriously while Erich was just a mere baby and there were no photos of them for Erich to remember his deceased parents.
Erich felt his mind withdrawing from him, fading away from the severe pain, into the dark abyss that was his sanctuary for now. Erich didn’t know that the next time he open his eyes, he would only see darkness.
A huge, granite stone was situated just beside those little dark flowers. Ancient trees with leaves ranging from the palest yellow to the darkest green shot up into the cloudless blue sky, with their branches high up in the air as if imploring the very gods themselves to pull them out of the ground. A few beautiful birds darted in and out of the branches, their voices weaving around each other, forming an enchanting melody.
Erich stood beside the enormous stone and he couldn’t help but feel so insignificant in this huge, wide universe. Suddenly, Erich was standing on top of the stone. He was just wondering what it would be like to be standing on the rock, surveying the tall, snow-capped mountains while feeling the fragrant wind brushing his face, making his nose tingled, and it had happened.
A black tulip sprang to life beside Erich’s foot. It’s stem continued to grow upwards, circling around his body, winding around his muscular limbs. The soft black petals brushed against Erich’s face, making him sneezed violently. Miraculously, the stem didn’t break.
The leaves tickled Erich greatly while the soft flower pressed against his neck. A searing white-hot heat flared without warning and he suppressed a scream. The stems, leaves and the flower faded away.
The heat faded away slowly, leaving Erich gasping for breath on top of the large rock. He didn’t know that even though the strange plant had gone, a tattoo of a purplish-black tulip with two emerald green leaves and stem curled at the right side of his neck had appeared. The tattoo stood up prominently against his tanned neck, especially the leaves and its curling stem – which was around the marvelous tulip – ,forming a circle.
A vampire bat the size of a car appeared suddenly in the air, diving straight at Erich’s head with its mouth wide open. The bat’s weird red eyes glittered malevolently before the creature passed over his head, knocking him onto his back with its large wings. Erich turned on the rock cautiously as soon as the creature passed, trying to locate the vampire bat but it had disappeared as suddenly as it had arrived.
Erich climbed cautiously back onto his feet and looked around him for the crazed bat. He sighed with relief when he couldn’t spot any trail of that bat.
An inhuman sound burst into being somewhere above Erich and he looked up in alarm, thinking that the vampire bat was back. He was surprised as a black bird roughly the size of large eagle spiraled around the air above Erich’s head. The most spectacular thing about the bird was that it seemed to be made up of black and white flames. The song flowing out of the dark phoenix’s beak was the most beautiful and terrible sound Erich had ever heard.
The terrible sound drove Erich to his knees and forced him to cover his ears. A trickle of blood leaked out from between his left fingers.
The world turned grey and started to spin. Erich collapsed with warning at all onto the cold granite rock.
As it all cleared away, Erich raised his silvery-blue eyes and was shocked when he noticed that the sky was a deep shade of purple, with strips of silver fire dancing across the sky.
Those strips of fire had seemed ethereal enough, but the empty land and the sky had not.
There were two sudden explosions somewhere in the air and Erich ducked low when the crazy bat and the dark phoenix dove down from the sky, aiming straight for him.
The two flying beasts changed their course together, deciding to fly away in front of Erich instead before descending onto the dirt-packed ground.
Crimson light flared and surrounded the bat while shadows whirled around the phoenix. As the two lights faded away, two figures stood in the beasts places instead. A woman with a curvaceous figure and red eyes set in a pale, beautiful face was standing on the ground where the bat was last seen. Her clothes was a flimsy piece of black silk wrapped around her body, putting emphasis on her ample breasts and flawlessly smooth legs.
The other figure was that of a man, his face was as handsome as a statue of a Greek god. The man was only wearing a tight brown leather pants which hugged his lower body tightly.
The two of them started to walk towards Erich, who backed away slowly.
The two ‘humans’ closed the distance between them and Erich surprisingly fast. Before Erich knew it, the pair of them were standing only an arm-length away, and for the first time, Erich was able to look at the two of them clearly.
The woman was breathtakingly beautiful, her hair as black as a raven’s feather, tumbling down her back gracefully, glancing off the light from the ethereal silvery strips dancing in the sky. Only two ringlets were left hanging loosely, framing her face. The woman’s toga was cupping her breasts, with her nipples showing through the cloth suggestively. Only her red eyes stopped Erich from kneeling down and worshipping her completely. Her eyes were totally red with no visible irises and instead of a round pupil, hers were slits, like a predator’s.
Erich backed away a little more and nearly fell down on his back. Instead of continuing looking at the woman, he turned his eyes on the man. The first things Erich noticed was his eyes and hair, which were both white and his eyes had no traces of pupils. The man was well built, his muscular arms swinging beside him casually, the muscles of his tanned chests and abs rippling as he advanced.
A cold wind wafted forward, lifting their hair lazily and making the cloth wrapped around the woman’s body even more.
“Who are you?” asked Erich fearfully. He had wanted to ask ‘what are you?’ but something had stopped him. Erich doubted he really wanted to know exactly what were these two. The two creatures – Erich couldn’t bear to call them humans anymore – looked at each other and seemed to have came to a conclusion telepathically.
The woman had moved so fast that Erich didn’t have time to blink. She had moved to stand behind Erich and rammed her knee into his spine, knocking him onto the ground and Erich could feel all his breath left his lungs.
In a swift movement, the man had shape-shifted into a twenty-meter long, gigantic python. The python reared up suddenly and opened its jaws wide. It then wrapped its body around Erich tightly, almost crushing his ribs. His heart hammered laboriously to pump oxygen and adrenalin to his body. Erich couldn’t do anything as he was wrapped tightly by those cold flesh and fear pumped in his ears.
Then the woman had climbed gracefully and alarmingly fast up the coiled snake to his eye level. She opened her mouth and Erich watched fearfully as her canine teeth started to lengthen, becoming inhumanly long and sharp.
“Stop!” a voice commanded as a woman strode forward with her arms out and palms facing them. The fanged woman was instantly yanked off and hurtled through the air to land hundreds of feet away. The python hissed dangerously before morphing back into the form of a man with his arms and legs wrapped around Erich tightly. The bone-crushing grip didn’t even subside after the python had shifted back to its original form.
The newcomer flicked her fingers and the man was sent flying as well, leaving Erich where he was.
“Go!” said Erich’s rescuer, her straight black hair whirled around her as she turned to look at Erich. Her brilliant blue eyes twinkled with urgency. “I’ll take care of ‘em!”
Erich started to run to the opposite direction but fell as he accidentally kicked up a loose stone. He twisted around expertly like what his football coach had instructed him to avoid falling flat on his face. Before he hit the ground, he noticed the tattoo of a black tulip at the back of his rescuer’s left hand.
