Broken Promises

“Don’t you dare accuse me of not fulfilling my promises!” an angry male voice had yelled.

“But you know it’s true! God, I hate you!” a crying female voice spat back.

In front of a blue house, a young woman and man were at a standoff with each other, fuming and cursing at one another. The dark-haired female thought, when did fighting become a daily activity in our relationship?

Flaming inside, the blue-eyed young man clenched his fists at his side while unbelievable thoughts of rage and hurt raced through his head. He wanted to comfort her, to tell her that she needn’t worry about the world, that he would protect her forever; yet, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. He just stood there, like a statue ready to explode.

He couldn’t believe what he was hearing out of his girl’s mouth. She was accusing him of being a fraud, a fake, a sham! She screamed at him the words he never wanted to hear from her – an unloving and mistrusting person and her hatred for him.

Shutting tight his darkened orbs, he watched his mind play dark, ominous thoughts and allowed them to cloud his vision.

She couldn’t believe it. She trusted him. Trusted him with her life – her very soul. How could he do that to her? Her tired brown eyes gave a glint of relinquishment – she just wanted to run away and leave him far behind. Maybe even out of her life. Permanently.

Three days ago, a friend of Angie’s had dropped a note off at her front door step, saying that she caught Daemon cheating on Angie four times – with Angie’s best friend. Angie couldn’t comprehend what she was reading on that small slip of paper. So many thoughts then overcame her mind.

Her chocolate eyes welled up with tears while the paper with her doom scribbled down upon it slipped out of her grasp and swayed lightly down onto the pavement.

“Admit it. You cheated on me with Karina! I can’t believe you. I can’t trust you anymore!” she sobbed, her body shaking at every word she let slip out of her mouth.

“You don’t understand! I didn’t cheat on you!” Daemon denied. “Why are you being so stubborn?! You’re not making this any easier for either of us!”

He took a step forward, wanting to wrap his arms around her, to comfort her and tell her this is all just a bad dream and that he never cheated on her.

With rage and sorrow clashing in her eyes, she pushed his reaching arms away and stepped back, not wanting to accept his love ever again. “No! Go away!”

Daemon tried to reason with her but he knew that it would not work – it never had and never will. So he tried pleading with her, making sure he didn’t raise his voice.

“Please, Angie, don’t push me away. I didn’t mean to do anything to hurt you, I swear! I don’t wanna lose you.”

Taking another step forward, Daemon grabbed Angie by her hands gently, pulling her towards him into an embrace. She tried to fight him off, to push him away, to push his roguish love away, but she wasn’t strong enough. She never was. Giving up, Angie let Daemon have his way with her.

He wasn’t sure if he was doing the right thing. He wasn’t sure of anything at that moment, except for the fact that he loved her. He loved Angie and he’d done his best to show it these past eighteen years.

Daemon felt light-headed and a bit deaf. His throat was sore from yelling and his eyes burned with tears that were held back. All he could hear were his heart pounding and Angie’s sobs. He wanted to kiss her eyes and make the tears go away.

How could I have been so careless and cold to her? Daemon thought. He didn’t mean to hurt Angie. He never did.

With his advantage in height, he softly laid his face atop of Angie’s head, taking in her lavender-scented hair. Oh God, did he love that scent. It always calmed his troubled mind.

Daemon could still feel Angie trying to wriggle her way out of his tight grip but he wouldn’t let her go. He will never let her go. If he did, Daemon dreadfully thought that he might just die from a broken heart. She meant everything to him. She was his life.

Another thought that played over and over again in his mind was how could he have been so stupid to break Angie’s heart?

It would look like they were a new, loving couple making up after a senseless fight from a passing bystander’s view but Angie and Daemon have been married for sixteen years and it wasn’t just another senseless lover’s quarrel. How could you cheat on your partner after such a long, happily lived marriage?

After a while, Angie’s sobs dropped to hiccups and sniffles, with Daemon still hugging her to his body tightly, and softly running his hand up and down her back, at means to comfort her.

Daemon didn’t know what to say to her. Angie was too tired to say anything to him. It was amazing how they would always fight, going from a crazy heated argument to dropping down to a silent embrace.

Breaking the silence, Daemon whispered into her ear, “Angie, please believe in me. You know that I will never hurt you. I promised you that long ago. And I never, ever intend to break it.”

Foolish as she’s always been, Angie began to believe him again. She knew it was wrong. She knew she was supposed to hate him but she just could not bring herself to do that to him.

“Do you swear on that?”

“I do. I swear on it with my life.”

Angie thought about rather having him swear it on her life but she kept quiet.

He slowly released Angie from his grip and gave her space to breathe but not enough for her to escape from the reach of his arm’s length.

She kept her head down, not looking up to him, to his beautiful blue eyes that had made her fall madly in love with him in the first place. Angie felt one of his hands leave hers to lift her chin upwards, forcing her to look into his eyes.

Not wanting to obey his command, she left her eyes closed.

“Angie, please look at me.” his deep voice begged of her. Always the one to give in, Angie sighed and opened her eyes slowly, her vision taking in his deep sapphire eyes, caramel tousled hair, and soft lips.

Daemon knew what she was thinking. He always did. It was like he had this unique sense of understanding the woman in front of him – he could see all of her through her window-like eyes. He also knew that he was the only one who had the key to her heart.

Sixteen years ago, he promised to love her and care for her, through the good and bad times. His mind vividly played out the vow he had taken when he had married Angie.

He remembered it word for word.

It was a beautiful afternoon in spring. The church was filled with family members and several close friends. He remembered how his heart had almost jumped out of his body when he saw her walking up the aisle towards him.

She looked like an angel. He felt his mouth was agape and quickly closed it, trying to keep his composure in front of the full congregation. But Daemon couldn’t help but keep that huge smile on his face that day. He felt like he was the happiest man to ever live on Earth.

When it came to the marriage vows, he felt butterflies flitter about in his stomach. He held her small hands in his own, smiling at her whilst Angie grinned back, both all too pleased to just stand still in front of the old pastor.

I Daemon Maxwell, take you Angela Darling, to be my wife. I promise to love you, only you, and cherish you; I will be a companion to you. I will share my strengths, and my achievements. I promise to respect you, and be a friend to you. For better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live.”

After the vows were promised and the ring ceremony had passed, Daemon felt pride, joy, and sheer happiness surge through his body when he had kissed Angie that day. He knew that he could never love another woman the way he loved Angie.

Daemon stared down into Angie’s soft chocolate eyes. He was surprised to see her staring back at him, but with wide eyes. He felt her move her hand towards his face, softly yet swiftly wiping away something wet. He touched his own face where her hand had been – they were tears that she had wiped away.

Angie looked at him with sad eyes, knowing that even though he’s done terrible things in his past and in their current relationship, she still loved him. She could never hate him.

He closed his eyes, bending his head down to hers, softly enwrapping his lips with Angie’s. Her eyes filled with tears yet again, knowing she could love him forever, even after death, but she could never change his ways.

After they parted lips, Daemon’s stern eyes locked with Angie’s tired ones. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for ever hurting you. I promised you I never would and yet I did. This time, I swear I will never do it again.”

She didn’t know what to say except “I trust you.” She laid her head down onto his shoulder, and with her petite stature, he again laid his head on top of hers, taking in her lavender scent once again.

Even if Daemon had done anything bad to Angie, she always forgave him. He cherished her even more because of that. He knew he could always depend on her for love and support. She gave it to him freely of her will. She loved him and he loved her.

Is this what true love is? Daemon thought.

Daemon silently swore to himself that enough was enough. He didn’t want to hurt Angie at all in the first place but he had let his darker side get the better of him. He had vowed to love Angie till death does them part and he intends on sticking to it. Actually, I’m gonna love this woman even after death does us part, he thought. Daemon smiled down at Angie and offered to take her home – to their home.

Hand in hand, they left the street where their promises were broken and renewed for each other. Daemon looked to his side at Angie.

“I love you, Angie. I promise that I’ll love you forever.”

Angie, knowing that every word Daemon said was true, yet fragile, she smiled back. “And I love you, too, Daemon. I have and always will love you forever.”

If true love wasn’t always happiness, but a mixture of disappointment, joy, sadness, pride, anger, compassion, and trust, then they really had true love for one another.

A/N: Sooo..? Enjoyable, yes? I tried to be as depressing and dramatic as I could possibly be… I think it worked out pretty well. Well, don’t forget to review and many thanks to my readers! (Edited 8/27/06)
