Understanding
I didn't understand. How could I be standing here if I was staring at myself lying on the ground? It didn't make sense.
"Make way! We have to get in there!"
I turned to look at the man. He was a paramedic. There were sirens in the backround that I hadn't noticed until just now. My eyes flew from me to my family. They were weeping on the side of the road. What-?
---------
I awoke to a bright light. Jus what was going on remained a mystery as I looked around. It was me again. Only this time, I was moving. But I wasn't alone. He was there. And we were arguing.
"No!" I shouted. "Please...!"
"I'm done," he spat. "I'm leaving."
I stared at him as he walked towards the door.
"Wait," I mumbled. "Please..."
He paused in his trek out the door and cast me a glare over his shoulder.
"Don't you get it?" he asked. "I'm done with you. And I never loved you."
Before I could do more than let out a pained sob, he was gone. I found myself running after him, blinded by the tears. I knew that his business didn't allow for love... But... I...
By the time I caought up to him, he was all the way down the street. I grasped his shoulder in my small hand. He cast me an annoyed gaze. I shuddered.
"Let go," he bit out angrily.
"Please... Why...?! Just-" He ripped my hand from his shoulder and flung me into the brick building on the side of the road next to the small grocery store.
I moaned softly, my hands instinctively reaching up to cradle my offended head. I winced. Blood...?
I really didn't want it to come to this," he told me, reaching into hsi jacket. "You just took it too far."
My eyes widened.
"No..."
"I'm sorry."
The gunshot was loud, defeaning even, on that cold night. I stared at my body as it crumpled to the ground in a pool of blood. As he walked away, I finally understood.
I was dead.
