Of course I’d recognize that smell anywhere, I even remember the taste. I spun around and found Elliot trying to get up, a large bullet hole in his left lung, I dived to him as he stumbled and jumped behind a crate as Nos let off another shot. I gently sat Elliot against the crate and inspected his wound.
“Mag-gie…” He coughed and blood trickled down his chin.
“Don’t try to talk…” I pulled off my coat and tore it into strips, wrapping it around his chest tightly; it was all I could think of doing.
“T-The sun…be up soon…”
Why did people keep telling me that?
“You’ll be ok Elliot, I’m going to finish Nos and we can go, ok?” I tried to smile reassuringly but I doubt it looked convincing with tears spilling down my cheeks.
“I’m…good.” He smiled and I nodded. I licked the blood from his chin and slowly stood, the memories of my first taste of Elliot swimming through my head as I strolled back to Nos.
“He’s still alive.” The psycho growled.
“He’s going to stay alive too.”
He chuckled. “Humans don’t always survive when they’re bleeding to death.”
I clenched my fists and suddenly saw red, my senses sharpened and the room seemed to darken. I thought I could hear someone whispering in my ear, my father, he seemed to be whispering to me.
“The power is yours to control, Day Walker.” He chuckled. “Release it!”
White flashed before my eyes and my body twitched, I could feel the power pumping through my veins and I loved it! There was so much more there than the first few times I had tried to use them. Something soft brushed against my shoulders and arms, it felt like hair, was it growing? My nails seemed sharper all of a sudden and I had to loosen my tight fists. I realized my eyes were closed so I slowly opened them to a terrified Nos backing away, what was he so afraid of? Couldn’t he do this too? My lips pulled into a grin
“You look scared, sweetie.”
“What’s happening to you Magravine?”
“I don’t know.” I admitted, the grin disappeared but returned in a flash. “But I like it!”
I jumped towards him in a single bound, as he stumbled back I caught his cheek with my nails. I wanted a mirror all of a sudden. He brought his foot up to my face but I caught it and slammed him in to a crate so hard the metal buckled I tossed him across the room and heard him crash into a wooden crate. A blood coloured tentacle suddenly had me by the neck, Nos rose from the splintered pile of wood and the tentacle rose with him, my feet left the floor and I choked.
“I’ll fight fire with fire, Maggie.”
“You’ll have to do better than that!” I managed to get out and slashed the tentacle with my nails; I landed on my feet and glared at him. At the same time our arms rose out to our sides and a mass of bats seemed to appear from nowhere, we dived at each other and randomly threw punches and kicks, he managed to grab my fist and threw me towards the wall, but I composed myself before I hit and landed on it on my hands and feet, crouched down. It was a neat trick. I leapt off the wall and tackled him to the floor, sinking my fangs deep into his neck for a brief moment before he threw me off him, we both flipped to our feet and he looked more exhausted than I did. He held the wound on his neck and narrowed his eyes at me.
A stream of light ran through the room, followed by another and another. I watched them appear-confused- where was the window? I spun around and saw the window near the roof, across from Lee’s cage, I hadn’t noticed it before since I was distracted by the fight; Nos knew it was there and Elliot must have seen it when we dived behind the crate.
“Mum!”
“LEE!” I managed to take a step before I was tackled and pinned to the floor. “Lee, stay calm I’m coming!” I struggled against Nos, but he was heavier than I was and I found it difficult to fight back with my face in the floor. I heard Lee scream as another stream of sunlight appeared near the cage, followed by the sound of bending metal. I strained my neck to see my Father pull Lee out and disappear into a portal just as a burst of light filled the room, hitting the cage.
“REAPER!” Nos cursed. I smiled and almost laughed, if I hadn’t released Father from the lab he wouldn’t have saved Lee-he gave me an idea as well.
A portal opened below me, Nos lost his grip as I fell in and it closed too quickly for him to follow. He stood and turned, my knee met his stomach and I picked him up by the neck; fire burning in my eyes. “That.” I growled. “…Was low, even for you…” I tightened my grip and my nails pierced his neck. There was suddenly a sharp pain in my chest. I dropped Nos and looked down at the knife, blood oozed down my shirt and I screamed. It was blessed. I fell back.
“You let your guard down, sweetie.” He laughed. “You should have been able to smell that.”
He was right, even with my sharpened senses I still couldn’t smell it-he probably masked it somehow…not that it mattered now. I heard his footsteps echo around the room as he made his way towards Elliot. Something didn’t feel right, yes I was in a hell of a lot of pain, but I wasn’t dying. I smirked and slowly stood, very slowly, I looked at Nos’ retreating back and wanted to laugh; I pulled the blade out of my chest.
“Hey!” I threw the knife and he spun around, his eyes growing wide as the blade hit his chest-his heart. I dashed across the room, grabbed my Lugar and bounded towards him, I pinned him against the wall and put the barrel to his head. “You missed.” I smirked and pulled the trigger. He was dust in seconds.
“Mag…” I turned to see Elliot stumble towards me and my senses were back to normal in a flash. I caught him in my arms and cradled him, brushing the hair from his darkening eyes.
“Elliot…I could…” I swallowed. “If you want me to…”
He smiled at me and I leaned in as he took his last breath.
“I thought my ‘toys’ were pathetic?” I frowned.
“This one has a lot of kick, it’s amusing.” My Father stepped out of his portal and gave me his usual psychotic grin. “You were careless, daughter.”
“Then I’m lucky to have you watching my back.” I smirked.
“Where is the other one?” He asked. There was a shot above us and the third nightwalker we were hunting flew off the edge of the building, a figure following it. I raised my Lugar to the air and fired the same time as the figure, we hit the scum in the head and dust rained down on us. The figure landed next to me and kissed my cheek.
“That one was mine, but nice shot.” He grinned.
“You’re still too slow, but you’ll get used to it Elliot.” I smiled. “Let’s go home, it’s almost sun up.”
