Just a short one-shot.

It was a cold day. One of the coldest of the year. It was cold enough for me to stop into a small coffee shop on the walk home. My tennis shoes were failing to keep my toes warm. I discarded my coat once I warmed up a bit.

I took a sip of hot chocolate as I kept my eyes on the book I was reading. I’ve already read it once, but I loved it so much, I’m reading it again. I felt someone’s gaze on me. I glanced up from my book to look out the window. The snow was falling gently, but that wasn’t what caught my eyes. It was the man standing by the curb, staring in the window at me. He had dark brownish-black hair that came to just above his ears and a chiseled jaw. His black coat was pulled up to his chin. He smiled slightly before gazing away. I smiled to myself before going back to my book.

The bell dinged, signaling that someone had come into the shop. I didn’t look up, I just continued to read my book. I took another sip of hot chocolate before feeling someone’s gaze on me again. I frowned, trying to focus on my book instead of the feeling. The feeling got the best of me and I looked up. The man from outside was sitting at the table across from mine, watching me. He had shed his coat, his muscles were noticeable from under his shirt and small snowflakes were still fresh in his hair. He offered a small smile before pulling out his own book.

He left before me that day, but not before gazing at me one last and offering another small, yet adorable smile.

This small offering of smiles and gazes between the two of us went on for three weeks. I learned a lot in those three weeks. He loved reading, each week he had a new book and one day he showed up with a Borders bag full of books. He was single. He liked blueberry muffins because he got one every day to go with his hot chocolate. He had silver-blue eyes, a great laugh. Okay, maybe I didn’t learn that much about him. But I did learn a little.

It was cold again, but today it was also windy. I was sitting at my table in the coffee shop. My hot chocolate in front of me and a book in my hands. The bell jingled and I immediately looked up to see the man. He smiled at me before sitting down in his regular spot. He was so handsome, he had a slight stubble today which made him look rugged and even more handsome. I stared above the top of my book at him, watched as he pulled out his own book. It had been a month since the first time I had seen him on the curb. It seemed so pathetic that I came here everyday just to see him, yet it doesn’t. I always look forward to seeing him. It’s the highlight of my day. It’s better than going home to my empty apartment. I sighed and looked outside, seeing the snow blow in the wind.

When are you going to take a chance?” Katy asked.

What do you mean?” I asked my best friend.

When are you going to take a chance? Like, go bungee jumping or on spontaneous trip to Italy or ask a guy out?” She said. I sighed.

I don’t know. I’m not that kind of person.” I said.

Well, maybe you should become that type of person. I mean, the last boyfriend you had was Sam and that was a year ago.”

I know, but Sam broke my heart, maybe I’m just not ready. I mean, he really broke my heart Katy, ripped it out and stomped on it. We were engaged and then I come home to find him in bed with some slut!” I said, sighing and putting my head on the counter.

I know, but not all guys are like that. They’re not all out to hurt you.” She said, rubbing my back.

I know.” I whispered, picking my head up from the counter.

Now what about this boy at the coffee shop, he sounds cute! Just go up and kiss him!” We laughed.

I could never do that, I’m not that type of girl.” Katy sighed at my reply.

Well, maybe you should become that type of girl, even if it’s only for five minutes.”

The bell jingled, bringing me back to the present. I looked back to see the man gone. I gasped, slamming my book shut. Where did he go? I looked out the window, seeing him by the curb, watching to hail a cab. Even if it’s only for five minutes. I took a deep breath before shoving my book into my bag, slinging it over my shoulder and grabbing my coat. I rushed out the door and immediately met the cold. My brown hair that came to the middle of my back and curled slightly at the ends blew in the wind along with my red scarf. My green eyes stung from the cold as I made my way to the man. A cab slowed down in front of him, I grabbed his elbow as he reached to open the door. He turned around swiftly, looking shocked. Just do it. His ears and cheeks were pink from the cold. His silver-blue eyes were as bright as ever and I wanted to melt. His lips were a soft pink that looked absolutely kissable. Just do it. I stared at him a moment before placing my hands on either side of his face and bringing his lips to mine. They were even more kissable then I thought they were. They were warm against mine, tasting of hot chocolate. I felt him smile against my lips and his hands on my lower back. I ran my hands through his hair, it was soft. We pulled apart after a minute. I stared into his eyes, seeing different emotions flood them.

“I’m sorry, I’m not the type of girl to do something like this, but I… had to.” I whispered. “I’m Jennifer, Jennifer Watson.”

“Derrick Hansen.” He whispered back. “Do you want to go get some dinner instead of coffee?” I laughed, leaning my forehead against his for a second.

“I’d love to.” I answered. He smiled before his lips came back down to mine, sending a tingle of warmth through me. The world faded away and all I could think about was Derrick. Nothing seemed to matter in that moment except for us. I forgot about my past heartbreak and became excited for the future and a new adventure. An adventure with Derrick which would last a lifetime.

I hope you liked it! Please review!
