Hidden beneath rags of gray,
Hair in knots and strings.
To work all day and through the night
And sleep only ‘til dawn’s first light.
Tears seep through all the dirt and grime,
Unseen by all around,
Little rivers run down her cheeks,
And fall silently to the ground.
The brightness that had shown in her life
Was brutally put out.
Covered up by rough cloth and soot,
Until no happiness was found.
“Come here”, “Do this” was all she heard
every minute of the day.
But in sleep all she finds it pain in her heart
For the one she loved, lied to, and lost.
She wants to say “I’m sorry”,
She wants his love to come
She wants her Prince to save her
From this wretched home.
Then one night when the moon was full
Her savior came to be.
Her rags turned to finest silk
And the all the dirt simply disappeared.
A beauty like no other
Standing in her gown of lightest pink.
Silver and flowers are braided in her hair
Reflected in the moonlight of this summer night.
He took her by the arm and led her down the road
Past cottages and gardens, past everything she knew
Leaving everything behind them
So that they could start anew
Suddenly their feet took flight,
They went into the sky
All night they danced among the stars
Missing everything around them, so distracted in each others eyes.
Once their feet touched down the stars began to fade
The sun rose over the hills
They knew the end was near.
Softly she touched his cheek and said, “Don’t leave me alone.”
He kissed her.
It was long, hard and true
Bending down he whispered in her ear,
“I’ll be back for you.”
“Take me with you, please,” she begged
And she took his hand.
So together they ran far away,
Their brightness blinding the average man.
