What the Wind Would Say

A child standing in the grass
Barefoot with a bandaged knee
Eyes of blue
Heart so true
Smiling and waving at me

His daddy watches from the window
Making sure his boy is alright
But knows today
He cannot play
For he's working late tonight

He remembers days when it was he
That played through the summer day
A child that was
Now an adult because
He understands not what the wind would say

How it whispers, how it pulls
And leads a young boy's mind afar
The dreams it inspires
And those it tires
Ones reality cannot yet marr

A reminder to reach for the stars
A window to see those he misses
A constant friend
Hope without end
And believer in all wishes

Maybe it's best he doesn't know
What beckons his child away
For he is a man
And doesn't understand
Exactly what the wind would say

As I stand here by the fence
And speak to his little boy
Our eyes shine
With the thought divine
For I still share in his joy

I am not a child now
Yet I remember those playful days
Because if I forgot
Though I cannot
What would the wind have to say?
