I once knew all the birds
that came
And nested in the forest
trees
For every flower I had a
name
My friends were squirrels,
toads, and bees
I knew what thrived in
that glen
Where the brooks tumbled
down below
Oh, I knew so much then
But that was very long
ago.
I knew the spot under the
hill
Where blueberries could be
found
I knew the rushes near the
mill
And all the biggest mud
mounds
I knew the wood, even the
very tree
Where lived the cocky crow
And all the woods and
birds knew me
But that was very long ago
And pining for the joys of
youth
I tread that old familiar
spot
Only to learn this solemn
truth :
I have forgotten...and am
forgot.
Yet here, this youngster
at my knee
Knows all the things I
used to know
To think I was once as
wise as he!
But that was very long
ago.
I know it's pointless to
complain
Of what the fates decree
Yet were not all wishes
said in vain,
I tell you what my wish
would be:
I'd wish to be a child
again
Back with friends I used
to know.
For I was very happy then
Oh so very, very long ago!
