the nights are hot
and the days are hotter
so we’ll grab our boards
and hit the sea
(the waves, the sand,
& you and me)

the beach shops and surfers
atmospheric to our world
of California cliché
where we were born
to grow our hair long
wear no shoes (but set the trends)

b i l l a b o n g Roxy RipCurl & s p l i t
low tide won’t last long
(so just savor it)

we didn’t grow up in Beverly Hills
but it was never very far
just past Melrose
on the corner of June

where colored signs and movie posters
pave the walls
and line the streets

andthe gritty scent
of summer
meets the rising mid day heat

soon a yellow crescent moon
hangs like a grimace
in the sky

a city so alive at night
the only stars you’ll see
are in Hollywood
dazzling the world
(more so than the Milky Way)

there are still dreams
creased between the cracks
of the asphalt streets

and if those lips
sing through the cigarette ashes
just long enough to shine
their name (just) might
go up in
l i g h t s

because if a star is rising
i won’t get a chance
to wish
until i see it f
