Who He Won and How He Got There
He shrunk back into the shadows as they walked to their table. He had chosen the best place for a spot of spying – right in the darkest corner of the café. The couple he was particularly interested in were seated in the brightest part – by the window – and he could see them perfectly.
He took the pad and pencil that had been tucked under his arm, and began to sketch the scene in front of him. He thought better of it, turned a page, and instead concentrated on sketching the real reason for his coming. He brought out the best in her: the warmth and happiness shining from her eyes; her relaxed posture; the way her hair fell across her face.
The overall beauty.
He felt a pang of jealousy as she reached out to touch her partner’s hand. That had once been him. That graceful figure had once been his to hold. They had been perfect together; or so he had thought. It had all changed when she had gone to that stupid rock concert without him and found the so called ‘love of her life’.
“Kisby!” He looked up to see who it was that had broken his train of thoughts. Agent Chilly had just walked in with Hilary Bartlett in tow. He looked back over at the object of his affection, and saw she was staring back at him. She smiled, blushed, and looked away. He felt the familiar flutter deep inside him, and beckoned for Hilary and Agent Chilly to join him.
“You know there is a rumour going round that they are separating?” Hilary had obviously picked up on the real reason behind his being there. Kisby tried to look uninterested, but felt hope rise up inside of him. “Apparently Fifi still has feelings for someone she used to see”. Hilary looked Kisby directly in the eye, hoping he would pick up on what she was actually telling him.
He did.
The three of them talked some more, glad of a chance to gossip. They spoke of Pye and Rasputin’s break-up (“It was never going to work”); of Jagger the Hut’s new girlfriend (“They are so cute together!”); and of the fair that was coming to Worthing. Everyone was going to be there, and there it was even rumoured that it was going to be a warm, dry day.
They left the café and went their separate ways. Kisby turned the corner and retraced his steps as he saw Fifi and Madeleine having a very heated conversation. He listened in, immediately liking what he heard. Madeleine had taken a liking to a new guy. They were definitely separating! He listened as they talked about how the fair would be their last outing as a couple, and that afterwards they would be free to do as they liked. The rest of their conversation seemed to be to do with more boring topics – shoes, make-up and clothes-, so Kisby decided to leave them be. He walked back to the hotel he was currently residing in, already planning a way to get his love back.
The days past by, and the fair finally arrived. It was set up on the seafront, adding yet more noise to the already sound polluted town. That evening, everyone turned up. Kisby strolled along the promenade, stopping to admire a few of the rides every now and then, but keeping his eye out for Fifi. He saw Hilary, and went over to talk to her. She was looking slightly embarrassed, and Kisby couldn’t help but laugh when he discovered why. He looked over at one of the near-by stands, to find Captain Caveman with a massive grin on his face, buying some candyfloss; looking like young child again. He handed over his money, walked back over to Kisby and Hilary, and started dancing. Well, I suppose that is what you would call it anyway. He was jumping and spinning round in circles, shrieking at the top of his voice, obviously have an amazing time. He finally stopped spinning, fell over, and accidentally let go of his candyfloss stick. He ended up with a new pink fluffy wig. Hilary smiled at the dopey look on his face, and went over to help him up. Kisby took it as his cue to leave. He didn’t want to hang around and spoil their fun.
He looked back, smiled, and shook his head. Their relationship astounded him. They were so perfect for each other; they brought out the best in each other and looked so cute together. The simplicity of their love was amazing, something everyone envied. And to think, once upon a time Captain Caveman had just been Hilary’s stalker, Hilary being so annoyed with him, so sure that nothing was going to happen between them. How wrong she had been.
Finally.
Kisby saw a familiar couple standing by the hot dog stand. He went up to them and said hello; noting that they were no longer holding hands, and that Madeleine had someone with her. Kisby smiled at Fifi, and climbed up onto the stand. Everyone turned round to look at him, just as he had wanted, and he cleared his throat.
“I bet you are wondering why I am up here on this hot dog stand.” He addressed everyone. “Well, I have something to say, and I want everyone to hear it, everyone to witness this moment so that it will not go forgotten. Once upon a time I was with a beautiful girl. She was perfect, and I loved her with all my heart. She was stolen from me, however, by someone truly unexpected.” He turned to look at Fifi. “I have never stopped loving you; my love grows stronger everyday. You are still as perfect as ever, and I miss you. I miss you like the earth misses the rain during a drought. I miss you like the mournful puppy misses his owners when they go away. I miss you like a parent misses their child when they have moved away. I am lost without you. If I am the only one feeling this, then say the word and I shall never mention it again.”
Fifi looked down at her shoes, embarrassed but grinning from ear to ear. She raised her head and looked at Kisby, and then did something completely unexpected. She climbed up on to the stand, put her arms round Kisby’s neck, and kissed him.
