Lost Memories

By Crimsondrop7

Chapter 1: Findings

A girl sat at her desk, impatiently waiting for the pencil to move.

“I can’t remember a thing!”

She didn’t pay attention in class today. As a result, she was stuck on a simple math problem. She let out another disgruntled noise and pushed her roller chair away from the wooden desk. She tackled the pencil again. She skipped the first, failing to solve it. She was in the middle of writing when a loud knock veered her pencil to the right, leaving a dark mark across the page.

“Faya? It’s midnight; go to bed! Do you hear me? Go to bed!” Her mother shouted.

“Okay, okay! I’m going!” She bristled.

Faya put her books in the backpack and set out an outfit for tomorrow. She moved to pack her duffle bag. She slipped out of her present day clothes and put on green, silk pajamas. She slipped into her warm bed with content.

Faya awoke to the blaring of her alarm clock. Her hand reached from under the covers, fumbling for it. After a few seconds of searching, she withdrew her hand from the table. She sleepily walked to the bathroom. The cursed alarm clock wins again.

Her skirt was a beautiful green. The top was a simple cream Renaissance shirt. Black elegant sandals graced her dainty feet. She added a white chocker with a small leaf pendant. Her hair was braided, some brought to the back of her head. The rest cascaded down her shoulders.

Satisfied, Faya strolled to her closet, pulling out another set of clothes. A change of clothes would be nice.

“Faya! Hurry up, or you’ll miss the bus!” Her mother called from downstairs.

“I’m coming!” She yelled, stuffing the clothes in her backpack.

Faya rushed out the door in a blur, managing to mumble a goodbye to her mother.

“Zack!” Faya waved to her friend, coming to an abrupt stop. “You look great in a tie!”

“Thanks. You don’t look half bad yourself!” He smiled warmly.

“Yeah, why not forget the whole ‘modest’ thing?” Tim joked.

“Sure. I’ll wear it everyday. And then I’ll put on make-up. And go to a bar. And wear lingerie.” She replied sarcastically.

“Hey, hey! I’m just trying to say you look nice. Can’t you take a joke?” He feigned a hurt look.

The ride to school was relatively noisy. As the bus doors opened, a group of eager students tried squeezed through the small opening. The end result was a heap of backpacks and students on the sidewalk. The three laughed, walking through the school doors.

Third period rolled around. Normally, Faya enjoyed gym, but they were running today. Oh how she hated running! Especially when the temperature was as cold as it was. Faya silently cursed Mother Nature for the awful weather. A metal whistle resounded the gym. Faya spotted three friends and ran to catch up with them.

“Hey guys. Wait up a sec!”

“Hello Faya.” They greeted.

The doors opened. A rush of cold air swept through the students. Faya shivered, holding her arms closer to her body for extra warmth.

“Cold?” Zack noticed the goose bumps on her arms.

“Gee, how’d you guess, Sherlock?” She grumbled.

“Why don’t you take this?” Zack took off his jacket and draped it around her shoulders.

How sweet of him to lend her the coat. Faya could have sworn chivalry was dead; guess not. Faya rewarded him with a smile.

“Thanks!” She said gratefully.

“No problem.” He said.

A gym teacher blew her whistle, calling students attention. “Listen up! You can run with anyone as long as you run! If I see anyone who isn’t running, I’ll send them to the bench and you’ll have to make this up on your own time!” She blew the whistle again.

“Are you looking forward to the lock-in?” Faya spoke in between puffs.

“Yeah! I can’t wait!” Zack agreed.

“Girls in pajamas; can’t wait.” Tim and Mike grinned wolfishly.

“Tim! Mike!” Faya reprimanded the twins.

Her attention distracted, she tripped on a shoelace and fell to the ground. Zack rushed to her side while Mike and Tim laughed ‘till their sides hurt.

“Are you alright?” Zack asked.

“Yeah. I didn’t know dirt tasted so good.” She gave an ironic smile.

She tried to lift herself from the ground, embarrassed of her fall. A jolt of pain shot from her ankle. She must have twisted it during the fall.

“Ow…” She winced, pain twisting her features.

Zack noticed her ankle. He bent down to inspect it, despite her futile efforts to keep him away. He tapped it. “Does this hurt?”

“Ouch! Yes!” Faya frowned. “Please stop touching it!”

“We’ll take you to a bench.” He ignored her request, slinging her arm around his neck. Tim and Mike followed, having nothing else to do.

A gym teacher checked her ankle and confirmed it was sprained. He allowed her to sit out, but her friends were not so lucky.

Faya picked at the grass in boredom. She swirled her finger in random patterns on the bench. She pulled her hand back suddenly. Great! Now she could add a splinter to her list of injuries for today.

She bent over the bench, intending to pick the poor grass again. A glint caught her eye. She weeded through the grass, her fingers closing around the curious object.

Faya opened her palm to reveal a small key, no bigger than her pinky. It hung from a thin chain. It was silver and engraved with black symbols. A tiny cracked crystal was tucked in the hole of the key.

She thought of how the pretty it was and what a waste it would be to leave it here. Faya clasped the necklace around her neck, tucking the key in her shirt.
