Chapter Two

“What a great way to start my day.” I muttered to myself as I trudged on to my second period class, which was English. I sighed to myself as I walked all by myself and worrying about my test, after being thirty minutes late as it was. But as I stressed about that I had to laugh. Last year I was a complete goody-goody and was always on time and basically was a 4.0 student. The kid who got her head shoved in toilets and crap about her scribbled all over the bathroom stalls. The kid who everyone befriended just to copy off of her, but that was last year. The summer had changed me. And I was more than glad that it had. I left this school a girl. I returned to this school a woman.

What makes a woman though? I asked myself as I started up the stairs, already feeling the dread inside of me build at the thought of my horrid and horrible looking teacher. The summer had changed me that much was for sure. But more than anything, Kansas changed me. I had my first drink, rode on my first riverboat, fell in love and most of all, learned the definition of fun. I used to be a boring girl, who followed all of the rules, but went far. Now, I was the same girl success wise, but I now had that one thing that many teenagers crave. Fun. Dan and I had so many adventures that the ones I mention are only a few. But the adventures of our summer were the ones that stayed with me forever.

As I sat down in my chair, I noticed a boy who was sitting like he felt lethargic at his desk. I looked at him and noticed his eyes rolling back into his head. I stopped and watched him for a moment, and then he put his head down on his desk. I looked away, assuming that he, like the rest of my class was falling asleep on his desk. There was nothing better to do in that class anyways but sleep. Or recite Shakespeare. You decide.

After a moment the bell rang and as a few kids came in from the halls, one of the girls screamed. I looked to see what was going on, only to see that it was the boy who fell asleep and he was lying in a pool of blood on his desk.

“What is that?”

“Is that blood?”

“Oh my gosh its blood!”

I stood up and out of my seat, prepared from all of my medical and EMT studies. I ran to his desk to shake him, then we pushed him back into his seat. From there I realized that he was unconscious and I carefully, with the help of one of my classmates pushed him onto the floor and laid him on his back.

“Is he breathing?” I asked Frank, who was in that class with me. I felt his neck for a pulse and noticed that the bleeding was coming from his nose. After Frank nodded yes to me that he was breathing, I got his pulse and knew that he was ok. I then rolled him onto his side and then grabbed a cell phone that one of the girls were texting on.

“Hey!” She hollered at me. But I didn’t care. I deleted the text and started to dial 911. I then handed it back to the girl.

“Tell them as I tell you.”

“Ok fine whatever.” She said. The teacher then entered the room and started to yell at us. I looked up to my teacher as she stood over me demanding an explanation.

“Go call the office and tell em whats going on.” I said then turned back to the girl. “Just give me the phone.” I said then took it from her.

“Hey I’m Andie Robertson and I am a First Responder I have an unconscious male, seventeen years old here with a severe nosebleed, there is also blood in his mouth and his eyes are really poorly bloodshot. We have him in the recovery position and there is about a pint of blood lost here in total. I need a paramedic crew here ASAP.” I said. “We are at Oquirrh Ridge High School.” I then threw the phone into my teachers face and reached for the kids neck to take his vitals. As I did so I felt my hand covered in blood. As I looked at it in shock I looked to his hair…he was bleeding from his head too. I stood up and grabbed over Frank to the teachers desk for a napkin, where I wiped the blood off of my hand, then took the phone back from the teacher. “Call ALS as well he’s got a head wound on the back of his head.” Then threw it back at her.

“I need on of ya’ll to go to the office and tell the VP.” I hollered, then pointed to two of them, then to two others. “I want you two to go to the heath teacher, see if you can get him in here ASAP. This kid can die, so going fast and running, would be cool.” I said, then leaned in to take his breathing.

What part was the exciting part? The ambulances showing up at our school and taking him to the trauma center, or the health teacher bringing her EMT bag and us bandaging him up, or was it the VP’s offering to let us all be excused for the rest of the day because of ‘traumatic visions’ that we had seen.

I’d take all of ‘em. Because I got to take a three hour lunch after that.
