Before you read this you have to know that this poem was meant to turn out way different. But when you read this, picture it taking place in the 1960's during the war. Men who were 18 years old or above were drafted, and there was nothing they could do about it. This poem is based on a story I was told about a woman who's husband was drafted and was unfortunately killed at war. Please read and tell me what you think.
SAY GOODBYE
Say goodbye to your life
Say fairwell to your dreams
I don't understand
Why you have to leave
Did you think about me?
The love of your life
The girl who shall one day
Become your wife
You promised me that you would
Always be around
But you'll break that promise
If you leave now
I was always by your side
Standing proudly next to you
And now you're forced to go
After all we've been through
It shouldn't be allowed
To happen this way
You did nothing wrong
Yet you have to pay
They came out of nowhere
Forced themselves into our lives
You know if you leave with them
You'll probably die
I screamed and screamed
As loud as I could
But they showed me no mercy
I didn't think they would
I don't want you to leave
But you have no choice
They don't even care
That your opinion was voiced
I will never forget
The love that we shared
I now have reason to believe
That life isn't fair
So now I will become
The lonely wife-to-be
Of a brave and handsome soldier
In the U.S. army
