Blood in the Night

By: Kamika Farinas

A/N: Written for my teacher's horror prompt.

She sat behind her desk, her hands tangled in her hair as she valiantly tried to avoid pulling it out of her head in frustration. The howl of the dog only fueled to irritate her more as she moaned and groaned. Blake had originally thought that if she ignored him, the howling would stop. She was sadly mistaken. She threw down the pen she held and pushed away from the schoolwork she would have to stop working on. Evening classes were difficult enough already, and now her dog had to add to the trouble. This was the ONLY time of the day she would be up, but apparently Brendan didn’t care much for it.

Blake grabbed the nearest rubber band on her way out her bedroom door and put her pale blonde hair into a quick ponytail. Its “tail” swung behind her head as she stormed down the hallway and down the stairs. Her dear Brendan stood on all fours, barking angrily at the door. It wasn’t hard to tell exactly what the dog wanted. Rolling her eyes, Blake grabbed the leash that hung to the side of the door. As she moved to get it, she glanced at the mirror that hung nearby. Frowning at what she saw, she quickly tore her gaze away and focused on the task at hand. She grumbled as she quickly put the leash onto her pet; then she moved to open the door. She placed her keys in her sweater pocket and proceeded to walk out into the pitch-dark night outside her house. She zippered up her black sweater over a white tank top and strode confidently in a pair of baggy pants. Despite her less than spectacular outfit, she seemed to give out an air of complete self-assurance.

Brendan stopped barking and happily wagged his tail, leading Blake toward the park that sat three blocks away. Blake walked into the park, following behind her dog in hopes that this would be over soon and she could return to her assignments. However, as soon as they entered the park, her feelings changed. The dark, inky sky was partially hidden behind the multitudes of tress that lay within. The light that came from the street lamps started to fade as they walked deeper and deeper into the park, their guiding light coming only from the stars. In the darkness, Blake felt comforted, and she relished this time alone, away from all the work she was to do. She wasn’t as alone as she first thought, as eyes followed her on her walk.

Michael Stone narrowed his eyes from behind the tree. He watched stealthily as Blake stood over her dog, waiting impatiently for him to do his business. In his mind, Blake was the perfect target. She was think, most likely a “dumb blonde,” and probably wouldn’t be able to resist him. He was going to take it all from her, and if she didn’t fight, then all the better. He rushed at her, expecting to have the upper hand of surprise. However, the situation didn’t go in his favor.

Her nerves were on end. She could feel the gaze of someone on her, and she could feel the excitement rising in her body. She fought to keep calm, but the time was much too late, as the person looking at her had just assaulted her. Blake easily flipped her attacker over her head and jumped on top of him. She couldn’t see his face, which was hidden behind a ski mask, so she promptly ripped it off. Her eyes turned a dark red and her blonde hair rose behind her as though a wind had just appeared to blow it back. From that point on, he knew that it’d be the end of his life. The dog’s barks were starting to escalate, but neither took notice. Michael could hear the wind howling in his ears as he stared into Blake’s now fully red eyes. Now he could hardly remember exactly why he had attacked her in the first place. All he could think about was just how mesmerizing she was.

She leaned over him to whisper into his ear, “You picked the wrong female tonight.” The sound blended into the wind, and Michael wasn’t certain if he heard her right. Slowly though, he could feel her head moving down until she stopped at his neck. Suddenly, as though he imagined it, teeth were plunged into his head. If all were right with his head, he would’ve been screaming and fighting to be free. However, he felt at complete peace with himself, as though he had been waiting for this his entire life. Blake proceeded to suck as much blood as she could from him, leaving him with none to live. Her entire body was ringing in pleasure from the unexpected feed.

As Blake was coming down from her euphoria, she noticed that her dog was no longer around, but she couldn’t care less. She rose from her prey that lay dead on the ground and wiped away the blood from around her mouth. Looking down at the male, she sighed in disappointment. If only she hadn’t wanted to mug her, she wouldn’t have had to take his life. Her eyes started to return back to their dark blue color, and the wind had stopped blowing as intensely as it did before. She felt around her mouth and slowly her fangs returned to normal. Picking up her watch, she noticed the time and cursed to herself. This had taken too long and sunrise was coming soon. She proceeded to dash toward her house, certain that no one would even find the male until the following afternoon.

She was right. The old lady, that had found Michael’s body at around 1 pm, had screamed her loudest, but Blake didn’t hear her in her deep slumber just three blocks away. She rose the following afternoon to find the front page to be an article about Michael. The spoke of the difficulty they were having catching the “Vampire Attacker” and asked anyone and everyone for information. Blake gave a small laugh as she read the rest of the article which questioned how exactly the attacker was moving since the victims lived far away from each other and were scattered all over the country. Rolling her eyes, she put down the newspaper onto her desk and opened the window. The dark sky with its bright stars beckoned her, and her body gave a shiver. Quickly, her human body morphed and as a bat, she flew out into the sky, looking for her next prey.
