Of the fearless

"What's out there?
what is out there"
a whisper, and then a valiant shout

firecrackers explode in the bank-
yes,
in the bank-
shooting smoke and rocks skyward

new loves and swallows' nests scatter the rugged beach dead fish swim hesitantly to shore

"look at the sun; we're so small"
he kicked and skidded a pebble over the waves,
turned on the burst of another firecracker

"are you afraid?"

"afraid of what?"

"afraid it'll blow up soon, duh"
she rolled her eyes and lit another

burst!

two bad attitudes,
two broad smirks,
two scrambled futures,
both intertwined

they could take those blasts but now was time for experimentation

"... let's start a fire"
those anarchic words he spoke

"sails are set, captain"
she, potential to kinetic

a salute to the sea a grasping of hands a whirlwind sprint

they ran, on a mission,
to catch it in the water,
but the water caught them

but no worries, of course:
it happens every day.
