Preternatural

The scent of Brand X hangs in the air
Perfuming plush seats with a careless ease.
The livestock are gone,
Sleeping,
In the light of Isis mourning.
The flowers, trees, grasses
Weep in sympathy.
Crickets cry out in shame.
All bow before her magic,
Sharing in her grief.
The Nightmare Patrol passes,
Monitoring dreams,
Recording for posterity
Nighttime’s troubled minds.
In the pasture ewes tremble
And the fences sigh
With growing apprehension
Of the spirit on the road.
The car door opens,
Legs move to and fro
Leading Life and Death and Shadow
In the Euthanasia Waltz.
A car -door and interior-
Suspended in midair.
Nameless legs and unknown body
Connecting with the earth.
A little strange.
A little weird.
A little…
-Ish.
The silent sirens scream.
The broken lights flash.
The legs pull together
And the door slams shut.
You push in the clutch
And shift to first gear.
Drive into the night.
Leave the nightmare behind.
