prologue >> the wreckage
Amerie Wilson digs her feet deeper into the sand. She stares out past the blue water of Lake Erie. She finishes her joint, tosses it as far as she can. She wonders how her life got to be like this.
The sun is coming up. It’s warm, but Amerie is shivering. She’s wearing someone’s jacket, though she’s not sure who it belongs to. One of the guys she used to consider a friend lay asleep not five feet from her. Two other friends are curled up next to each other in the backseat of the van. The one with the broken heart sat apart from everyone else. Then there was her.
Amerie raised her right arm to examine it. There was the story of her life. A bruise from a punch she didn’t have to take. Scratches and wounds from an accident she didn’t have to have. Scars from cuts she didn’t have to make. No regrets.
She wasn’t sure how they made it to Lake Erie or how she came to be staring at the sunrise. She was shaking and she didn’t know why. A hand touched her shoulder. It could have been anyone. She didn’t care. It was a hand. That’s all that mattered.
