The Scar”

By Lauren

Her hair was raven black and straight as an arrow. Her eyes smiled at me as she climbed over the fence that divided my yard and hers. She was my best friend and neighbor. We were destined to endlessly play house, paint rocks and ride bikes together. She had just come over to play dolls with me.

My eyes twinkled with excitement as we locked hands and sauntered towards my back door. Little did I know that our hands were soon to be torn apart by my big brother no less. Swinging around a metal baseball bat, he came bursting through the door before we had reached it. He stood tall above us, his brown, shaggy hair falling into his eyes. Sunlight glinted off the steel metal of the bat, causing my brother to appear that much more menacing. Before I could protest or even realize what was going on, my friend’s hand had left mine.

I had never noticed the admiring look she always held for my brother. I naively wondered why she seemed to pick him over me when it came to choosing between the two of us. What was so great about a boy any ways? Didn’t they have cooties?

Looking up, I watched as she jogged out into the grass of my back yard. She was preparing to catch the ball my brother would soon be sailing out into the sky. I was left shocked. Hadn’t she come down to see me? She was my friend and now, I was abandoned.

My brother had to dig through the bushes behind us before he located a mud stained ball. I searched for words, but I didn’t know what to do. Why were they playing, leaving me behind? What about me? The sister and the friend? I wanted to be included also!

He stood erect, tossing the ball into the air with ease, while my friend looked up to the sky, partially blinded by the bright sunlight.

I stumbled towards my brother, my mouth opening, yet not a single word escaping my lips, as that satanic metal bat swung backwards. As I moved forward, I could see it moving back towards me, but I was moving too fast. I couldn’t stop myself. It was almost there.

The pain blinded me. I couldn’t even react. A yelp escaped my lips as I stumbled backwards with the force of the hit. I couldn’t hold myself up. Before I know it, I was on the ground, my vision turned red as crimson blood trickled into my eyes.
