Candy Wish

You called me your angel, your baby, your darling. At night we’d sit upon the balcony, overlooking bustling streets, cold winter evenings, and people in frantic worry.

The nightlife buzzed around us, my dear, and we felt like nothing could hold us back.

We held on tight, clinging onto each other with grips as strong as iron, twisting and turning and feeling what life had to offer and what we meant to do with our share.

But I didn’t expect this.

You’d come home everyday, a beautiful sunshine in your precious wake. Your eyes a golden hue, your hair as deep as the abyss, your mind so carefree and loveable I could feel my adoration for your rise with every breath. You’d feed me sweet candy each night, laying entwined in ecstasy, our bare bodies warm in a tight coil.

You said you couldn’t live without me.

So when that day arrived when you made the foolish mistake, when you admitted to me without a single word that everything we had made you truly happy, I knew what I needed to do.

I couldn’t deny your last wish.

When you stepped so carelessly off that balcony ledge, when I leaned over in crying horror to gaze in confusion and utter shock at the twisted, curled body lying lifeless and bloody upon gritty concrete, I fell to my knees and wept.

Wept for the lies you spilled forth.

Wept for the nights I believed you.

Wept for the life I thought we lived.

So with a piece of candy melting in my dry mouth, and a kiss into the heated air, I fulfill your last wish with a trembling gun in my hand.

Because baby, you said you couldn’t live without me.
