Life as a fairy queen

By: HiTanner85

The skies, you know they live at night. When people don’t look and the angels take out torches to light the stars and the clouds all move away so the moon can watch over you, they sparkle like diamonds. I live in the clouds, I see it all from up there, floating on a sleek gray night mist that is unseen by most. I sleep in a fog and wake in a dream.

Life was routine. I looked forward to rainstorms that shook the world and drenched all in glittering drops of liquid chandelier. I thought lightening bolts were just as pretty as wedding rings and shiny streaks of unharnessed energy were mesmerizing.

From my place in the sky I could see a forest. Thick mounds of endless trees that looked lush and green, a pale blue stream that twinkled with reflections of stars and heavenly orbs. There were thousands of rocks, billions of blades of mint colored grass and sweet smelling flowers that peeked through gaps between leaves.

My sky was dark and brooding. It was harsh yet comforting and at times it felt as if I had a thousand friends. There were also the nights where I was so alone even my skin ached and the pale color that I was usually proud of made me sick to my stomach. I had wings, but I hid them inside a dress made from nights shadows and bits of magic dust.

And on those nights that I felt so lonely, I took out my voice and sang until my lungs ached and my chest wrenched with sobs. I wanted to go down to where the trees grew up and the flowers smelled like honeydew, but I couldn’t. Life as a fairy queen was painfully solitary, there was no way to go about having a life as normal fairies did.

A GENTLE BREEZE BROUGHT HIM THERE

That night that it happened I was scared. All was still, no motion was detected even in the farthest of miles and I didn’t feel right about it. I was perched on the side of my cloud, sparkling white feet dangling over the side, casting faint shadows across the unapproachable ground. My hair a long shade of red was tied in knots all about my head and brushed lightly against the bottom of my back. I hated those wings.

Then I saw it, far away I saw it coming. There were thousands of them, bright lights that shone in my face and around the night sky. Like a crowd of fireflies or a gathering of energetic stars they were forming, all running into the forest. It was that night, the meeting of the fairies that I noticed him, he was lagging, far behind the rest. He was left behind.

He was almost as pale as I, bright green hair that hung into bright orange eyes. He had given up trying to catch them, and was floating languidly on nights breeze. I watched him close, what a strange character. And then he must have felt my eyes, because he jumped up and searched the sky. I froze, no one had seen me since my birth. No one.

“They left you too?” He asked, and he was speaking to me. I nodded, too dumbfound to reply with some sense, too smart to give away my identity.

“The elders, they’re getting worse. I couldn’t go as quickly, my wings, they’re. . .” He stopped, turned around to show me a pair of wings misshapen and obviously beaten. He looked ashamed, but it quickly passed.

He was still so far away. I couldn’t quite see his face, but he was getting closer by the minute. He was struggling with the wind.

“I’m Gapper.” He was now sitting on my cloud, my lonely cloud. I stared at him, unable to speak. My voice, I wasn’t sure if it worked out right any longer. I held my breath. I knew I had to speak eventually.

“I’m Bray.” I finally said, my name sounded odd and foreign. Night just called me Bell, nothing more, no less. They knew my voice, but it sounded so different coming out formally and so to the point. I watched him close.

Gapper was tall, taller than me but short to humans. He was stark white with big orange eyes and a baby doll nose. He smiled and his teeth looked straight and shiny like tiny pearls. His wore a traditional male outfit with the exception of patches sewn around the knees and elbows. His hair it was bright neon and turned almost yellow near his neck. I smiled at him, without even meaning to.

“You’re the prettiest bell I’ve ever seen.” Gapper said, staring at my face as if I were those flowers I had idolized over the years. I shook my head, no.

“I want to kiss you.” He stated. I had never heard of a kiss, but I knew it involved the mouth. Night had spoke of an angels kiss before, I was never quite sure exactly what was involved. I arched my eyebrows in confusion.

“May I?” He asked and I nodded. I trusted Gapper, I trusted the bright hair and violet eyes. I wanted him to be honest to me, I believed he would be. What he did next made my eyes sparkle and turn a deeper shade of pink. He took his mouth and pressed it against mine. I tingled all over. He whispered secrets to my lips and tickled the roof of my mouth. He tasted like apples, the kind that night dropped on my cloud every night. He pulled away first, taking his sweet mouth with him, taking away the spark that lit behind closed eyes.

“I’m sorry, but you seem nice. I didn’t think you’d mind really.” He stated.

“I didn’t. That, kissing, it was nice.” I mumbled, my cheeks burning. He smiled. He took a smooth hand and ran it along my face, traces of my magic remained on his fingers and he wrote a heart on his cheek and then one on mine, they shone like diamonds against crushed velvet.

“Aren’t you going to the meeting?” He asked. I shook my head, no.

“I don’t like those kind of things. Life should be left alone, no meetings.”

“I think so too.” He nodded his head enthusiastically. I wanted to fall off that cloud and leave with the precious Gapper. I loved the way he seemed

Then he pulled out a flower from his pocket and handed it to me. A real life flower, bright pink petals and a thick delicious scent. I ran my fingers along the lovely blossom, it was a wonder. “You remind me of a flower you know. Kinda delicate and all. Your lips are just as pink. Your eyes too.” He pointed out his finger and traced along my mouth, I wanted another kiss. I was ready to be spoiled by them.

“You may kiss me again.” And I had said it without thinking. He grinned, his pearl-like teeth showing for a moment before disappearing behind rosy lips. And he did kiss me again. He had a way about him, a lovely way of kissing that I knew must be perfect as it made me feel like taking off into the night sky and doing cartwheels around the moon. He went deep and we lay back, the green haired boy holding himself up around me on a cloud of mist that seemed to be quickly fading away. His head tilted as to go even further and I laced my fingers in those green locks that I found utterly intoxicating. Bubbles floated around my head and pushed all the sense off the heavenly dwelling. All I wanted was those kisses, hundreds, thousands, millions of kisses.

“Are you promised to someone?” He asked. We had quit kissing and I felt dizzy and drunk. I smiled and shook my head. I grabbed his collar and pulled him back down on top of me.

Lovely darling Gapper. I liked him.

“Would you come with me?” He asked, pulling away. I wanted more.

“Where?” I asked, eyes sparkling, lust pricking at my throat.

“Away. Far away. I don’t want to stay here anymore. I’m sick of the elders.”

“I’ll go.”

“You will!” And he kissed me again. This one was simply a happy kiss. He held my hand and we flew off. I didn’t have anyone to say goodbye to. Night would follow me anywhere I went. I wasn’t scared.

And we flew, my wings worked. They worked now and they never had before. We flew away. Gapper and Me, my gapper. We flew away toward the opposite of normal and there we were. On the edge of night, but so far away from day.
