i hate word limits... gr.... so, i wrote this because i am going to enter it in a magazine, "Criket"'s, writing contest. it had to use a location on a map they gave you. and the max. number of words i could use was 350.... so that was a pain

this started completely different... but i had to change it because my original was 600 some words. gr. if someone requests it i might put it up... maybe...

oh well, R&R please!!!!

Of the Sea

“Shoo!” Marin yelled waving her arms wildly at the birds that had began to attack the turtle eggs that had just been laid. Her brown hair blew with the wind as she raced on the beach down from The Quarries. The scavengers scattered into the winds and Marin knelt down by one of the nest that had just been lain. She recovered the eggs up with sand and looked into the ocean. There near the edge was the mother turtle, watching her.

Marin waded out into the water and approached the turtle slowly. She was able to stroke the shell. Marin wrapped her arms around its shell. The turtle started to go under water.

“Hey, wait-“ she took a deep breath and closed her eyes barely in time when she was pulled under. She opened her eyes. There before her was the most magical thing she had ever seen. Brightly colored fish danced in and out between the sea grass. Their scales reflecting the sunlight that made them sparkle. Colorful corals decorated the bottom. This was everything she wanted to protect.

Suddenly, Marin realized she was running out of air. She pulled up at the sea turtle that took the signal and began to descend upward.

The glistening of the surface made her heart soar with excitement. At the certain angles, the light seemed like stars. A clear sky with stars one of the hidden wonders of the world. They broke the surface and she took a large gasp of fresh air.

“You took me there because I helped your children?” The turtle’s eyes seemed to express her thanks. Marin smiled, “Thank you.”

Up at the village, her father watched her out the window of his hut. He smiled slightly letting out a sigh.

“She’s going to be just like her mother.” He watched Marin run up the beach and turn to watch the setting sun. He clutched a picture of his belated wife to his chest.

“Maya, she is just like you… our little Marin. Marin of the sea.”
