Elemental Opposites
Ch. 1 High School Beginnings

“Hi Pierce!”
Pierce looked up from his schedule to see a mass of dirty-blonde hair tackle him to the ground. He groaned loudly as he landed on his butt, the other boy in his lap
“Ciro,” Pierce said only slightly annoyed, “Did you really have to do that?” A boy, smaller than pierce, smiled up at him.
“I missed you,” Ciro replied a pout falling across his boyish features. Pierce sighed to himself.
“You were over at my house on Saturday,” Pierce said standing up. He brushed off the back of his dark blue Levi jeans. Ciro followed suit. He was about a head shorter than Pierce was.
“So…,” Ciro said still pouting. Pierce let his eyes scan Ciro’s choice of clothing; a white Aeropostale shirt that said “I can’t say what I’m thinking right now” in dark blue letters, beige Mossimo cargo shorts and white New Balance shoes that looked relatively new. Pierce smiled to himself as he messed up Ciro’s always mussed dirty-blonde hair even more. The pout left Ciro’s face and the light returned to his sky blue eyes. The two were without a doubt the best of friends since they had first met in pre-school. Pierce rolled his dark brown eyes at his friend’s antics and thrust a piece of paper in his direction. Ciro looked at his curiously for a few seconds before he grabbed it from his friend’s hand.
“We have first, second, fourth, seventh, and ninth period together,” Pierce said before his hyper-active friend could even open his mouth. At hearing this Ciro pouted again, “Now what’s wrong?”
“Only five?” he asked whining.
“You complain too much,” Pierce said. A sudden wind blew across the courtyard in front of their new high school and Pierce fixed his grey Champion windbreaker. He quickly scanned the courtyard, while running a hand through his brown hair, where groups of students were talking to each other, in an attempt to find any of his other friends. Finding none he turned back to Ciro. “Come on we need to find our lockers,” he grabbed Ciro’s hand and pulled him inside the school building.

“Augh, must he be so loud?” Ciaran muttered darkly under his breath. He pushed off from the tree he was leaning against and started to make his way towards the two boys, planning on making them shut up. Most people moved out of his way as he crossed the courtyard, he wasn’t exactly the most liked kid in the school. It goes to show you how well known it was that he didn’t like to be bothered, since this was his first day at high school. Ciaran didn’t mind though, he was a loner. Although, Ciaran did have one friend that he always liked to have around.
“Hey Ciaran!” a voice from behind him called out. Turning around he saw his only friend, not that he minded that he was his only friend. Lucas was walking towards him at a decent speed. His blonde hair had recently gotten cut, just a little shorter than it was before, which wasn’t all that long to begin with, just long enough to go past the tops of his ears if he wanted to put it that way. Green eyes shone brightly when he smiled at his best friend as he stopped in front of him.
Ciaran’s eyes briefly traveled past Lucas to see the rest of Lucas’s friends glaring at him. They were what most would consider preppy jocks. They did well in school and all of them did at least one sport. Lucas himself played soccer. Ciaran never really new why Lucas’s friends detested him so much. He could only think of one reason, which was he had given one of them a black eye for calling him Goth. He was not Goth.
He supposed it could have also been they way he looked. Usually he would wear black, which was why Lucas’s friend had called him Goth. However he didn’t wear make-up or anything, and he hated being called Goth. Today he had chosen a black fitted tee shirt, baggy black jeans, and of course his black wristband which read “The Dark is afraid of me.” His long black hair reached the back of his neck, his bangs hanging a little bit over his eyes. Then there were his eyes. They were a deep blood red. Everyone who dared to would ask if he wore contacts. Those people usually got a punch in the face. It was probably some genetic mutation but his eyes were red. No one in his family had ever had red eyes though, so he had no clue where they came from.
“Morning,” Ciaran replied. Once again he looked over his best friend, this time to see what he was wearing. A cream colored Aeropostale jacket with brown sleeves covered a plain white tee shirt, which clung to his relatively toned chest. He was also wearing a pair of Levi jeans. From under his shirt Ciaran could see the chain which held a golden cross.
“You weren’t going to go and bother those two, were you?” Lucas asked pointing over to Ciro and Pierce.
“They were loud,” Ciaran said with a shrug. Lucas rolled his eyes with a small smile.
“Hey Lucas, are you coming or not?” Blake, one of Lucas’s other friends, called to him.
“But,” he said looking back and forth between his friends and Ciaran.
“Go,” Ciaran replied pushing him slightly. “I’ll see you in class,” Lucas smiled brightly at him.
“Okay, thanks,” he said and ran over to his other friends, who were had begun walking towards the school. Ciaran sighed and headed towards the school as well.

“Hey hold up a sec,” Calder heard as someone grabbed him by the back of his shirt. He turned around to see light brown eyes staring into his own blue-green eyes, and he blushed lightly. People had always said that his eyes reminded him of the ocean, but that was beside the point because he was in a hurry to get into the school and didn’t have much time.
“Tr-Trory,” he whined softly. “I need to put this away,” he said holding up his violin case. Calder was in the school band and he wanted to put his violin away before classes started. His other friends were also waiting for him in the band room. Trory smiled and let his friend go.
“You really need to do things besides music you know,” Trory said pointedly. Calder could feel his face flush again. “I’ll walk with you,” Trory said happily. Calder just nodded. “Hey!” he called over to his other friends, who were now skateboarding on school grounds, which was illegal, “I’m goin’ with Cal ‘kay?” His friends looked curiously at him but nodded anyway.
“Thanks,” Calder said as the two headed into the school building. Calder took this time to look over his friend. His bright red hair seemed to almost flicker like flames, though it always did that. Trory was pretty well built. His muscles weren’t as defined as the football players, whom Calder believed used steroids to get muscles that big. Seriously though, they were huge. He was also taller than Calder, which Calder did not like since he wasn’t all that tall. His Element tee shirt, which although wasn’t fitting, showed some of his figure, was a forest green and the emblem had a spray paint affect to it. His jeans, which were only a little tight on him, were ashen in color and had the element logo on its back pocket. Under his right arm he carried his black skateboard. There was one odd thing about Trory, which was his skin. It seemed as if he always had a perpetual tan. Even in the dead of winter his skin was still tanned. This was the complete opposite of Calder.
Unlike Trory, Calder’s skin was always pale. No matter how much he would be in the sun he wouldn’t get a tan, just sunburn. Calder himself was wearing a light blue polo shirt and a pair of jean shorts. It goes to show he wasn’t the best shopper as he never new the difference between the brands. Calder’s own hair was a light brown and sometimes hung in his face, though he often pushed it out of his face. The two reached the band room in a comfortable silence. Calder pushed the large door open and let himself and Trory inside the band room.
The room was large and, supposedly, soundproof. There were risers on two walls for the students to practice on, complete with chairs and music stands. On the third wall were lockers for the instruments. In the center of the room was a single music stand where the conductor, Mr. Fujitaka, would stand. In front of the lockers were three other students, all of them Calder’s friends.
“Calder! Hi! It’s been ages,” a girl said waving Calder over. Calder smiled at the girl, Tammy, and walked over with Trory in tow. Tammy was about a foot taller than Calder, much to his disdain. She had a pretty face with bright blue eyes, which were covered by thing rectangular glasses, and long blond hair which was always in a ponytail. “Oh hello Trory,” she said noticing the other boy.
“Hi,” Calder said smiling softly.
“Hey guys,” Trory said to them. The other two were both boys. The first was a little shorter than Tammy, he had dark brown hair and green eyes. His name was James. The other boy was about Calder’s height, maybe a little taller, with blond hair and hazel eyes. This was Adam. The two boys greeted them as Calder placed his Violin in his locker and turned around to his friends.
“You know,” Adam said to Calder, “Mr. Fujitaka still hasn’t given the solo to anyone yet. I bet it’s going to be you.” Calder blushed at this.
“Yeah he’s right,” James said agreeing with his friend.
“N-no, Tom will probably get it,” Calder said looking at his shoes. The three other band members rolled their eyes.
“You are so much better than him,” Trory said softly. “You’ll kick his ass!” He said punching the air with his hand. Calder blushed even redder when Trory said this.
“Aww look we made Cal blush,” Tammy said laughing.
“Sh-shut up,” Calder said just as the warning bell rang.
