Dance of Friends

I danced
You came. You watched.
Far too shy to tap your toes
to that tune in your head

I danced over
and dragged you onto the floor
laughing as you stumbled
but smiling when you became something more
and we spun across the floor
to a song that only us two could hear

She danced better.
We admired her together
but then you left
and made me wonder
if you had ever really heard that song
that we had together

Now you and her spin together
to a melody of your own making
and I watch and I remember
that little song we had together

I wish I could dance with you once more
like we did during those first days
as we cut a swath across the floor
when you stumbled and I smiled
and we laughed forever more.
