#1- Rhiannon and Poseidon (Friends)
The black Friesian lifted his head to greet his friend, his long mane falling over his forehead and then down his neck. Normally, he grew tired of constant companionship by the other horses, but things were different with Rhea; the beautiful brown- and- white paint’s outgoing personality complimented him nicely.
Rhea shook her head and trotted around Poseidon, circling him. She stopped in front of him, her eyes staring into his. He snorted, causing her to jump back. She whinnied and reared up, trying to encourage him to race with her. She trotted around him, whipping her tail back and forth.
Sea would have rolled his eyes if that was something that horses did. He ducked his head, pausing. Without warning, he bolted, his strong legs hammering his hooves into the grass. Rhea squealed with excitement and took off after him. Despite her small size, the Arabian was light-footed and caught up with Sea. Together they galloped through the field, playfully bucking and rubbing up against one another.
A lithe muscled shadow watched the younglings race and licked his chops greedily. Sure-footed and silent, the predator crept forward.
Rhea was now in the lead and turned her head, aiming one of her life-filled eyes at her dark-colored friend. She paid little attention to what was in front of her and stumbled when one of her hooves met an uneven surface in the ground.
The cougar took this as his opportunity and used his powerful legs to propel himself forward at the mare. The paint saw the enemy attack and squealed loudly, rolling onto her back and throwing her sharp hooves at the attacker. The cougar fell back, but gained his footing quickly and stalked forward, looking for the next best method of attack. He had not gained another step forward, however, before a strong, muscled shadow stood between him and his intended meal. Sea bellowed his challenge and pawed the ground with his hoof impatiently. The cougar accepted the challenge with an echo-filled roar, and propelled himself forward, front claws extended.
Sea jumped to side, gracefully dodging. He whinnied at Rhea as if ordering her to flee. The paint turned and backed off, but stayed within a short distance of the fight. She would not abandon him only to keep herself safe. The cougar tried to follow the filly, seeing her as the easier prey, but Sea jumped in between them once more. The predator now knew that his chance at lunch meant going through the fierce protector first. The cougar crouched and flew at the Friesian’s back. Sea reared up, the cougar’s claws only able to rake his side. The colt screamed in anger and turned, stamping down his hooves. The cougar moved in time to deflect the hit, but what did hit him hurt badly. The cougar backed up and attacked once more, this time successfully latching himself on Poseidon’s back. Sea leapt and bucked, trying to unattach the clawed assailant. The mountain cat hung on long enough to bite into Sea’s neck, but missed the imperative nerve. The black colt rolled, flinging the cougar off of his back. He pivoted off of his front legs and struck the cougar square in the ribs with his hooves. The cougar screamed and turned, fleeing for his life. His empty stomach would have to wait.
Poseidon bellowed and followed the cougar a short ways before halting. He rested, sucking in the air deeply, his barrel heaving. When he was sure the aggressor was no longer within a dangerous distance, Sea slowly turned and was greeted by the sight of Rhiannon racing towards him. She whinnied with both excitement and worry. When they met, they touched noses and rubbed cheeks. Rhea allowed this to continue for only a short time, however, before inspecting the rest of his body and worrying over his wounds. Sea nipped at her flanks, trying to tell her that he was okay, but she lightly dodged it and finished her inspection. Satisfied that she had found each of his wounds, Rhea then turned and met his nose once more. She pressed her body close to his, offering her warmth and support.
Sea accepted the support gratefully, and together they walked back towards the herd, bodies moving as one.
