under the cover of night

we fit together

the line of our bodies

stretches along

and for minutes at a time

you belong to me

the lines of your face

against my neck

your eyes across the room

draw a straight line

between us

and no one knows

in silence and darkness

all the lines

that divide us

become a distant memory

in the stolen moments

and line by line

we’re writing the script

for every fight

or drunken conversation

setting up our regrets

in a tidy line

that no one sees

when morning breaks

the lines reform

a cage of sorts

barring our hope in chains

and I’m waiting in line

while the train snakes by

I belong to nothing

when you’re gone

just a single line

in the grid

of this endless city

whom no one hears

in the harsh daylight

I watch you

walk past the ticket line

and away into the distance

at home, I’m staring into

the lines of the shower tile

trying to wash off

the smell of incense

trying to forget

the lines your hands drew

down my body

and you don’t know

that when the lines change

when the night ends

when daylight separates

the line between a lie

and what we pretend

is reality

there will be a day

when the lines won’t fade

you’ll stay there

and I’ll be here

because these lines divide us

but no one cares
