A Serpent in the Garden
by P.H. Wise

Despised of nations, he profanes the seat of power
Dispensing his ‘freedom’ and ‘liberty’ at the point of a gun.
Have these words become meaningless?
Does freedom mean slavery? Ignorance, strength?
Has the promise of our nation come to naught?
There he sits, that wretched knave,
Who thinks himself the chosen of God
With vacant eyes and a self-satisfied manner
Convinced of his own righteousness
No longer liberty pursuing,
But self-degraded to a serpent
Coiled throughout the tree of the knowledge of Conquest
He brings damnation to us all.
