This was an assignment from my drama, screenwriting, and performance poetry class. We had to write a play, or a skit, about something we were sure of, using a symbol, two-character limit, and no dialogue. So don't send me reviews saying it could be better with dialogue because I KNOW THAT. But it was AGAINST THE RULES to USE DIALOGUE. OK? OK. If you don't have the patience to read this sort of thing, find something else.
Never Lose Hope
Scene: A small living room. The room is painted white, and has a window stage R with off- white curtains. A light brown couch is sitting in the corner stage L and stage R is a television and hooked up to it is a game consol. Between the couch and the TV is a small coffee table with various books and magazines lying on top of it, along with a remote control. There is also a tall lamp standing next to the couch near the audience.
(CASSARAH enters from the left, carrying her backpack. She looks to be around twelve or thirteen years old She sets it beside the lamp and flops onto the couch, obviously having a long day. She reaches over and grabs the remote and turns on the TV, flipping through the channels, and then looks behind the couch, hearing a knock at the door. She turns off the TV, pulls herself up, and opens the door at the left, immediately frowning and crossing her arms as AIDEN enters, smiling and nodding politely to CASSARAH. AIDEN appears to be around the same age as CASSARAH. He looks around the living room and frowns slightly, and then turns on the light from the lamp, and starts to smile. He looks to CASSARAH as if to say, “There, that’s better, isn’t it?” CASSARAH rolls her eyes and sits back on the couch. AIDEN sits next to her and notes the game consol. He hits CASSARAH gently on the arm, motioning at the game consol, and seems to be asking if she wants to play. CASSARAH shrugs and nods slightly, and gets up and sits in front of the table, followed by AIDEN. CASSARAH turns on the game, handing AIDEN a controller, and soon, the two seem to be focusing on a game intently. After a moment passes, AIDEN looks quite triumphant, and CASSARAH looks malignant. She stands up, clenching her fists, and starts to march away. AIDEN follows after her, a concerned expression on his face, and he spins her around. She pushes him away, but he grabs her again and smiles apologetically. CASSARAH backs away slowly and nods slightly, looking downwards. She sits back down on the couch quietly and looks away, seeming to be wiping at her eyes. AIDEN sits down next to her and shakes his head, putting his hand on top of her fingers carefully and hesitantly, as not to upset her more. CASSARAH looks up and smiles slightly at AIDEN. AIDEN grins and stands up to leave. He uses a small salute as a goodbye, and CASSARAH waves goodbye back. As he leaves, CASSARAH turns off the lamp. As if he were cued, AIDEN returns and turns the lamp back on. He grins, salutes, and leaves once more.)
BLACKOUT.
I'm feeling mean today.
