Contrast

day and night
black and white
life and death
good and evil

you know, the opposites

let me catch the wings of Sunrise
and ride her over the ocean
flying back home to my valley
with hope and passion renewed
a fresh start, as begins all days

when he placed his hands around my neck
and strangled me
I returned his gaze with love
and I didn’t falter, for that was my power
shaking and going numb couldn’t change
my love for my destroyer

let the cool darkness envelop me
now near the mountains
the thick bleakness of night
threatening to overwhelm
with its indescribable beauty and harshness

when I placed my hands around her neck
and strangled her
she returned my gaze with her love
and all the stinging words I could pronounce
all hatred and anger I tried to fill her with
could not penetrate that compassion

life works this way, in opposites

rich and poor
big and small
old and young
man and woman

these are the things I know
these are the things I have yet to learn
these are the things I share
all this in a yin-yang

my two hands, left and right
the calls of day and night
returning in a circle
from the ashes
