PROLOGUE
It hadn’t been that bad, it could have been worse. The strong Eastern wind blew through Death’s black hair as she eyed the scene below. Yes, it could have been much worse. The deaths had been in the hundreds, not the thousands, nor the tens of thousands. Everyone on the battlefield lay close to death or dead. Her job was nearly done, only a few more to send to Heaven.
She sighed as she watched the fields of burning grass and flesh. She glanced up at the sky and looked on as the blue sky was beginning to fill with grey smoke. Sighing again Death set to find those who were near death and give them peace. As she passed by each dead soldier she thought of each life and how beautiful each of their lives had been before this war. Death sighed again, humans and their wars. Wars were idiotic ways to settle disputes and to give her more of a difficult time.
It seemed that that 15th century Scotland was going to be giving her a difficult time. The more she thought about it, the more she became angry. She did not want to be picking up after the bloodshed was over. It was like this after every battle. She descended on a smoking field and looked carefully over the fallen with a critical eye. Her pale grey eyes widened as she caught sight of a man who was barely breathing.
She rushed to his side and picked up his head to rest it on her lap. “Wake up William.” She announced as she looked down at him, her eyes glowed white while waiting him to wake up.
His eyes slowly opened as she stroked his blood-dried hair. He gasped as she glared down at him piercingly. “Do you know who I am?” It was now that her true visage was realized. Soft white wings encircled him as her black tunic and cloak billowed in the wind.
“Death.” He whispered between parched lips.
She smiled at him with a nod. “Correct.”
“Am I dead?”
“Not yet.”
“Will you kill me?”
“No. I have a proposition for you. I know that your wife is with child.”
He gasped. “Surely you would not kill a babe!”
Death chuckled softly, “No. I would not do such a thing.”
“Then what does my child have to do with you?”
“I wish to have a child of my own. Since I am an angel, I cannot do that. Instead I have to have a human child to be part of the living world.”
“I cannot make you a promise that I would give away any of my children.”
“You want to live, do you not?”
“With every fiber of being.”
“I will let you have three children. I want your fourth. I will make it so that your wife forgets it and you as well.”
“Will you treat it well?”
“With all my heart. I would protect him or her with all the fierceness of my being.”
He glanced at her then sighed, “I agree to your pact Death.”
She smiled while looking at him, “Very well.” Wings and light enveloped him and next thing he knew he was in his bed, bandaged and a bit sore. He groaned softly then smiled as he saw his wife enter the room, her stomach slightly swollen with child.
“You’ve awaken my husband.” Mary announced.
“Yes.”
Mary flew to his side and hugged him tightly. “I thought I would never see you again.”
“It is alright my love. We are reunited and that is all that matters.”
William sighed happily as she rested against his body. He couldn’t be any happier than he was now. A voice suddenly interrupted his thoughts:
Remember our pact. I will come back when your fourth child is born. Do not forget this William or it shall be your undoing.
Death’s voice rang strong and true. He had not imagined her. He sighed softly, all he had to do was wait for her coming and it could be years before their fourth child was born.
