Beautiful Pain
©Holly Charlton

Wine and candles,
I am alone.
No deal or problem do I have
No dissatisfaction do I harbour or host
I am perfectly content to stay,
Perhaps identically like this
Until the end of my days circle to claim me.
But change is good
Something altered supplies me with
Distraction and disillusion
From what some might describe as this beautiful pain
It is etched and painted, sketched, carved, sculpted
Into me, like a microchip implanted within
No matter where I tread, it's like an all too close shadow
Impossible to shake loose
I let the match's burning head touch the wick
Candle sizzles, inferno inside me breaks out
Expressed by frightfully hot tears
The wax pools, dribbles down and hardens
Just like lava
I could swear I'm standing over magma
But temperatures now drop
And glaciers form from my tears that I...
Untruthfully never shed.
