Three Blind Mice
Summary: She always wondered what it would be like if her prince charming was the enigmatic and mysterious Cameron, or maybe the cheeky playboy Rhys or even the cool sophisticated straight-laced Alexander. She wishes she hadn’t wondered, especially now, when she starts receiving unwanted attention. From all three of them. Worse yet, they’re triplets.
Chapter I : Competitors
iOiOi
It was almost like I was staring at my reflection. My reflection which was currently flirting shamelessly with the brunette in church, when in actual fact it was supposed to be praying… and maybe even asking for forgiveness. No, make that grovelling for forgiveness. Then again the said reflection wasn’t really a reflection and wasn’t really mine. Rhys Mather was a notorious playboy who used his dick before his brain. I could even go as far as saying that he replaced his brain with his dick.
I know, I know… I’m being crude. But I object; if you know my triplet then you would know that he’s anything but a saint.
With a casual and often innocent smile, a hand through his hair and a piercing gaze, Rhys could charm any girls’ pants off. Literally.
I’m not exactly here to complain about my brother, believe me I’ve done enough of that to his face, let alone behind his back. I’m just annoyed.
Actually, I’m bloody pissed.
He’s a conniving bastard and he knows it. Ever since we were young Rhys and myself have been competitors. Not the friendly ones either. Oh no… we were the full-blown “I’ll-eat-worms-because-you’re-eating-worms” type of competitors. Everything I ever wanted Rhys would want it as well. We were rivals, in every aspect and in every game.
When we were four, he stole my favourite “Buzz Lightyear” toothbrush and used it to brush the dogs’ teeth.
When I was six, he “unintentionally” killed my beloved rat by running over it (repeatedly) with his bike.
When we were eight, he found out that I was in the little league team, so he joined, despite being the only one who didn’t know how the hell to play.
When we were thirteen, he stole my crush from me, right from under my nose.
When we were seventeen, he crashed my car, and then blamed it on Cameron knowing very well that Cam would never do a stupid thing like that.
Now when we are eighteen, Rhys was sitting next to this girl and flirting shamelessly with her. In normal circumstances it wouldn’t bother me.
If it wasn’t for the fact that she was my bloody soon-to-be girlfriend!
“Stupid bastard!” I hissed under my breath, which received a hard jab in the ribs by my mother.
I scowled at her and asked God to forgive me. Not for swearing, but because I wasn’t able to murder the asshole, who was currently rubbing his hand up and down on my soon-to-be girlfriend’s thigh!
Cameron looked at me for a millisecond, and then followed my gaze towards the couple. He smirked, which to no end annoyed me even more. Stupid asshole. He finds everything amusing.
Once the mass ended, I walked outside calm and dignified. I wasn’t going to make a big deal out of this. That’s what Rhys wanted. He wanted me to get pissed off. Never mind the fact that I was.
“Xander, mate, what’s wrong?” Cam questioned once the mass ended. We slowly made our way to the reception hall, where usually the families found it a convenient location to chitchat whilst devouring in coffee, tea and biscuits. Considering we lived in a small town, the Christians who attended church normally knew everyone by their names.
“Nuthin’” I gruffly replied, which prevailed Cam to raise his pierced eyebrow.
Just as I was about to whinge about Rhys and his stupid tactics, the devil himself popped up next to us.
“What’s up my bro’s?” he asked slinging his arms over both our shoulders and pulling us in to him.
“Nothing really.” Cam said, calm and collected as he usually was.
That’s the thing about Cameron; he’s quite the opposite compared to the two of us. We’re fraternal triplets, so technically we don’t have to look alike. But somehow Rhys and me look quite similar, with brown hair and hazel eyes we could almost be passed as twins. Whereas Cam looked rather different, not only in his physical attributes but also his personality. He was considered the rebel in our school, not because he got into trouble, but because he was the silent and mysterious type. He never let anyone in, save Rhys offcourse and me.
In the end I just thought he was a moody bastard.
“Did you see that chick?” Rhys continued, halting us in our steps. He directed our gaze towards her; she was currently standing with her family, joyously laughing, which made her face light up.
She was so pretty.
“She is damn HOT!” I clenched my fists at his comment. He sure knew how to rub salt on one’s wounds. Bloody oath he was fucking excellent at it.
“Look at that arse! Mm…mmm!”
“Shut up Rhys!” I snapped, my composure melting way.
Rhys gave me an innocent look, “Why?”
“You know why.” Cam responded, taking Rhys’ arms away from his shoulder.
“Why?” Rhys once again asked, this time feigning complete confusion. I wanted to rip his face out!
“Xander likes her, and you know it.”
Rhys raised his eyebrows comically, “Oh! Xander you never told me that you liked Tami!”
I glared at him. “You knew I liked her! Stop lying.”
“So this is the Tami you like?” he chuckled, “I though it was the other Tami that you liked.”
“How many Tamis’ do you fucking know?” I growled in frustration.
“Xander! Tut, tut, don’t swear in the house of God!” I clenched my fists.
Don’t get me wrong, I love him, I really do, after all he’s my stupid triplet. But there’s times when he gets so frustrating that I just want to inflict pain on him. So much pain…
“Rhys, stop man. You knew that Xander liked her.” Cam once again intervened with his calm reasoning.
Rhys scoffed, his surprised façade dropping instantly from his face, “Well it isn’t my fault that he doesn’t have the guts to do jack. I mean, Xander I’m sick of you just sitting behind her in maths everyday, staring at her. Christ’s sake man, I can almost always see the drool!”
Heat coursed through my cheeks, “That isn’t true.”
“Like hell it ain’t. Even Cam knows it!” Rhys’ expression softened, “Look Xander, I was just getting in a good word of you with her.”
“Yea with you feeling her up!”
“Hey don’t hate the player, hate the game!” Rhys answered his hands held in a surrender position.
“Rhys I know how to get a girl! You don’t always need to help all right? I can do it myself.” The anger was now completely evident in my tone.
“No you can’t Xander. When it comes to girls’ dear brother you’re pathetic!” I glared at him and looked at Cam to support me against the abuse Rhys was laying upon me. All I got was Cam looking completely and utterly guilty.
“I’m not pathetic.”
“Yes you are.”
“No I’m not!”
“Uh… yea you are!”
“I’m not - ”
“Prove it.” we wheeled around to look at Cam, he was casually standing against the wall with his hands in his pocket. Such a casual pose, yet it was hard not to see the dominance in it.
“How?”
“Well…” Cam slowly started smiling, “Why don’t you two make a bet?”
“A bet?” Rhys questioned.
“A bet.”
“What kind of a bet?” I asked.
“Oh I know!” Rhys immediately shouted, “Xander has to make a girl fall in love with him head over heels, and take her as a date to Jenny’s wedding.”
Cam shook his head, “That’s boring.”
“No, I haven’t finished yet. I’m going to be trying to make the same girl fall in love with me. If I lose I will never annoy Xander again…” when he saw that I was about to protest, Rhys held up his hand, “and I’ll show up to Jenny’s wedding butt naked!” This shut me right up.
“Same consequences apply to Xander.” Rhys finished.
“But who’s the girl going to be?” Cam asked.
“Tami of course.” I answered.
Rhys shook his head, “Nah, that’s way to easy. In the end you’ll benefit.”
“We need someone who we don’t know anything about.” Cam replied.
We were all silent for a moment, scanning the room for someone eligible.
“Ok… the first decent person that walks in from the reception doors will be the one.”
Seeing that we had no other options, we all agreed.
So we waited.
And waited.
Waited even more.
Waited a little bit longer.
Waited -
Then finally the doors opened.
That’s when ladies and gentlemen my heart stopped.
It was Ayla Summer.
