She headed back to the cliff’s edge. Against her better instinct, she peered into the roaring depths below her. The light from the moon glistened on the stone on the bottom of the lake. He was still there, waiting for her. His hollow black eyes still staring up at her, beckoning her. How far would she lit this go? Would she allow it to take hold of her once more? No. She couldn’t do that again. It had been a close call last time, when she nearly met her fat following him. Following him where? To the edge of course. But who was he? Why did he show up in her dreams? Why did she wake up to the call of his voice? What did he want?
Why you Clarissa, I want you!
No, go away! You can’t have me, you can’t take me, I won’t let you!
Why Clarissa, you’ve already gone.
A scream erupted from her cold blue lips. The memories of that night came flooding back to her, just as the flooding rain had drenched him right before he… before he what?
You know exactly what.
Suddenly she could see him perfectly. It had been raining hard that night. She had caught Edward again. He had cheater on her for the last time. She told him to leave and never come back. He begged and pleaded but she had said she wouldn’t forgive him, not again. He had looked her straight in the eye and said
You’ll miss me once I’m gone.
Clarissa whipped around. He was standing right behind her, those hollow lifeless eyes boring into her.
You made me do it Clarissa.
No!
She screamed. She dropped to her knees, tears spilling down her face. The tears mixed with the rain which had just begun to fall from the sky. In an instant she realized that it hadn’t been a dream, it had happened. All that she was remembering had happened.
A police siren went off in the background. She immediately became aware of her surroundings. There were people and police officers everywhere. She turned to see a police officer talking to sobbing woman next to her.
“Ma’me, please try to tell us exactly what you saw.”
“I saw him at the edge. There was a- a girl chasing after him and telling him not to. He- he did-didn’t listen. I heard him tell her ‘You’ll miss me once I’m gone’ and then he- oh god he jumped. She was running after him and- through the pouring rain you couldn’t- couldn’t hardly see a thing. She didn’t see the edge. The last thing I heard was her scream.”
“Sir, I hate to interrupt, but we’ve found two bodies at the bottom of the lake.” said another police officer.
“Have either one been identified?”
“Only the girl has sir.”
“What was her name?”
“Clarissa.”
