Escape

“There it is...” she whispered, slowly closing the door, a shadow of a smile creeping up her lips. “My beautiful...” she walked to her table, and reached for a metal object. “Dagger...”

For a long time, she just stood there, staring intently at the object in her hand, taking in every single detail. How its surface glistened as light was reflected of it, how sharp its edges were, how it was slowly starting to vibrate in her hand as she noticed the tiny dark stains that she had probably failed to clean out the night before, and how these stains were bringing back painful memories.

She closed her eyes and slowly took a deep breath, counting to ten before she exhaled. Then she smiled, a twisted sort of smirk with a hint of sadistic intent.

She walked around her room, hands toying with the weapon she held. Her smile still reflected sadism, while her eyes glinted with the malice of evil.

She stopped by her window and looked out into the night. She took in the beauty of the waning crescent moon, although she preferred the full moon because it emphasized the mystery of the darkness, it was still beautiful nonetheless.

She noticed that there were no clouds tonight, for the stars were cheerfully winking down at her. The malice in her eyes faded and was replaced by a look of longing. How she wished she could join the stars. So carefree, twinkling away at the pathetic humans down below. Never alone, but always in the company of their respective constellations.

She sighed and turned back to her room, tearing her gaze away from the heavens. “No use in longing for something you can’t have.” she muttered. And just like that, her sadistic self was back.

Lifting her arm up, she stole a glance at her wrist. A long thin scar met her eyes, reminding her once again of past pains buried deep within her. The pain, the shouting, the harsh words, the beating. She was never accepted, never wanted, never loved. “I was always the unwanted one...” she mumbled.

Against her will, tears started welling up in her eyes. She dropped to her knees, she was shaking uncontrollably, hot tears spilling down her face. “I can’t take it anymore...” she whispered.

She gripped her dagger tightly, looking at it through her tears, making her decision. She gently placed its tip over her scar. As skin met steel, she shivered.

“I’ve done this, only to release my pain and make sure I wasn’t numb.” She murmured, pushing the dagger point through her flesh, feeling her skin rip open. “The deeper I get, the more scared I feel. Scared that one day, I’ll be too numb to care...” She exerted more pressure. “And now I believe...” Blood started to ooze out of the wound. “... I believe my worst fear has come true.”

As she stared at her wrist, the stench of her own blood filling the air, all barriers broke and she lost it. Crying uncontrollably at first, then laughing. A maniacal and sadistic laugh.

She licked the blood off her fingers and grinned. Lifting her dagger again, she dug deeper into the wound, adding more and more pressure until the blood flowed freely.

Then she stopped.

She stared at what she had done. Blood was everywhere. On her hands, her clothes, the floor...

She was breathing heavily now and her vision was losing focus. She could feel herself slipping away. “I’m dying...” she realized.

She screwed her eyes shut, she was scared but there was no turning back now. “It’s... the... only... way... I... can... escape...” she whispered. “Or is it?”

A/N: Yeah... It’s a little more graphic than I intended. Oh well, don’t forget to click on the review button and tell me what you think.
