Promises

I'm so tired of being here

Suppressed by all my childish fears

And if you have to leave

I wish that you would just leave

Cause your presence still lingers here

And it won't leave me alone

She turned away from the sight, tears threatening to fall again. He lay there motionless, silent, his sweet lips pale. His eyes were closed, preventing her from gazing and drowning into the deep gray pools. What if he had not leapt in the way of the car? What if he had not shielded her from what was meant for her? What if he died now and she never got to tell him the three words she knew he wanted to hear? Then again, maybe it would be better if he left. Because every night, his image haunted her, stayed with her, and refused to leave. Every night she dreamt of him and she could not sleep. She felt an offending tear seeping out from below her eyelid.

These wounds won't seem to heal

This pain is just too real

There's just too much that time can not erase

When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears

When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears

And I held your hand through all of these years

But you still have all of me

She looked at the scar on her arm, before continuing to gaze at his chest slowly rising and falling. The beep of the machine resounded in her mind, reassuring her with each beep that his heart was still beating. She winced as she brushed her fingers over the scar. It hurt so much. It hurt because it brought back memories of how he was the one to keep her away from the tantalizing razor. And he was the one who made sure that that very scar was the last she ever made.

He was the one who gently brushed those glittering tears on her face away as she sobbed into his chest painfully. He was the one who held her close, never letting go, sharing with her his strength, comforting her when she used to cry out in the middle of the night. He was the one who helped her overcome her fears, protected her from them. He was the one who took her slim hand into his own big, warm one, the one who walked her through her darkest moments hand in hand and shared her troubles. He was the one.

You used to captivate me by your resonating light

Now I'm bound by the life you left behind

Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams

Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me

These wounds won't seem to heal

This pain is just too real

There's just too much that time can not erase

He was the hottie in school, the ones all the girls fell over in their haste so that they could get to him. She wasn’t pretty, she knew that. And all the girls were green with envy of her for he chose her, out of the masses of barbies that he could have had at the snap of his fingers. It was a small wonder why they fell for him, with his active participation in various sports, his toned, muscled body, greek god looks and smile, and that deep, sexy voice that used to send tremors down her spine each time she heard it.

She reached out with her hand to move those strands of hair sweeping his brow, caressing his soft cheek, savoring the warmth of his caramel colored skin. Her eyes were beginning to water again. She felt another tear trickling down her face. If only he could awaken and brush those tears away. If only he could take her hand in his again. Her head shot up when she heard the long, dreaded sound coming from the machine. Her lips fell apart as an anguished shriek ripped through the room, “NO!” She pressed the bell for the nurse repeatedly as she collapsed on top of his body. She could see his life ebbing away, just like that. It was floating away in tendrils, escaping her fruitless clutch. Her hands gripped his sheets tight as she screamed his name, tears flowing freely now. The nurses had to manually drag her away from the bedside and she hung on tight, unwilling to let go.

When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears

When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears

And I held your hand through all of these years

But you still have all of me

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone

But though you're still with me

I've been alone all along

Sitting atop the cliff overhanging the ocean at the beach, she gazed out at it. It looked breath-taking, the waves slamming against the jagged rocks down below. The salty sea breeze blew her hair back, and tickled her senses awake. She closed her eyes as she remembered the last time they came here together to watch the beautiful sunset. He had wrapped his strong arms around her, making her feel so safe, so secure.

He promised. He promised he would bring her here again, so that they could watch the sunset together once more. She could not face the fact. He could not have left her alone. He promised. Her heart wrenched as she watched a loving couple stroll along the coastline. She suddenly felt so empty, so alone. He said he would never let loneliness be her only company again. He promised. But promises are meant to be broken, the way he broke his.

When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears

When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears

I held your hand through all of these years

But you still have all of me

As she went on staring at the sun setting amidst a burst of scarlet and purple, she thought she saw him waving at her, his familiar lips curving into a sweet smile. She saw him mouth the words, “Don’t cry.” And that was when the tears started to flow again.
