The summary is pretty dang dramatic eh? Eh? Yes, yes it is. Fear it. Pay me money.
Yeah don't worry, the story isn't that serious. Get's funneh. Really funny, if I do say so myself.

First chapter! Reviews and critique are welcome, since I want to improve as best I can. But no flames. Flames are pointless confidence-crushers, so if you're a flamer, leave. Go on, shoo

Chapter One

“Ah, Skie…” Reilly sighed sadly, hanging his head so his chin touched his chest while standing in front of his best friends’ grave. “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you…” he said, struggling with the words.

The horse-sized green dragon shook his head next to him, “It wasn’t your fault.” He said comfortingly, nudging his friend in the shoulder.

Reilly took a deep breath, but remained quiet, staring at the flat rock that served as her tombstone. Her name was all that was carved into it, in large letters that looked like someone who had no idea what they were doing carved them out.

The dragon scratched his claws in the dirt, waiting for Reilly to do something other than just stand there.

An hour passed slowly, the black-haired fifteen-year-old still deep in his own thoughts, his dragon sitting next to him patiently.

“Reilly? Are you still here?” a female voice called from behind the two.

Reilly turned around, seeing a tall girl with hair color matching his own step out of the thick forest that surrounded the small clearing and stretched on for miles on end.

“Hey, sis…” Reilly said, putting his hands in his pockets.

“You’ve been here all day, come on, let’s go home,” the girl smiled warmly, holding out her hand. She looked about eighteen years old, her black hair barely reaching her shoulders.

“…” Reilly didn’t say anything, he glanced back at the grave, his stare lingering on the stone until he turned back to his sister and nodded, “’kay,” he said shortly.

The girl put her hand on her little brother’s shoulder as he walked by her, the dragon following them.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

The trio walked silently through the forest, the thick treetops high overhead letting little sunlight through, making it darker than usual as dusk approached, the scattered rays of sunlight here and there dimming slowly.

“…Arenah?” Reilly asked without looking at her.

“Yeah?” She said, looking down at him.

“Do you…do you think there would be any way to bring Skie back? I mean…it’s my fault she died.” Reilly said, his voice almost cracking.

The dragon grunted, his tail swishing back and forth, but didn’t say anything, letting his friends’ sister be the one to comfort him this time.

“Reilly!” Arenah sounded shocked, “It wasn’t your fault! I’ve told you!” she said.

“But I was standing right there! I froze! I could have saved her!” he said, “I owe it to her.” He sounded almost angry.

“No, you don’t.” the dragon spoke up, “How many times do we have to tell you? You couldn’t move because PyroMettalic paralyzed you.”

“Jeriesh is right. You know all too well what that maniac can do. It’s his fault, not yours.” Arenah said, “And besides, she was the one who challenged him.”

Jeriesh nodded, “She was being foolish,” he started.

Reilly’s knuckles turned white as he clenched his fists.

“She challenged him to a fight out of pride-“

“Don’t talk about her like that!” Reilly roared, stopping and twirling around, glaring at the dragon now standing in front of him, “You don’t know anything! She challenged him to save me! You may not know this, but I’m the one who challenged him first!” the boy yelled angrily, bottled-up rage swimming in his eyes.

Jeriesh didn’t move, an instinct of his species to never give his attacker ground, even though Reilly wasn’t attacking him.

Arenah shook her head, “Well! That was something you left out!” she said.

“Whatever,” Reilly’s fury seemed to evaporate. He turned around and started back in the direction they were going, stuffing his hands back in his pockets and hunching his shoulders.

“Reilly!” Arenah said, but was ignored as the boy kept walking, disappearing into the thick foliage.

Jeriesh lowered his head a little, the white spines on the back of his neck ruffling, like feathers on a bird, “I didn’t mean to upset him like that…” he said quietly, ashamed.

“It’s ok, I’m glad you did.” Arenah said, “He released some of the tension that was bottling up inside him. It was poisoning him,” she crossed her arms.

The two stood in silence for a second before continuing on.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Reilly sprinted towards the large clearing up a head, the forest floor in this area of the forest not littered with dead leaves and twigs. He skidded to a stop in front of the humongous tree in front of him. It was tall of course; all of the trees in the forest were tall. Think, Redwood trees, only double that.

This tree was just as tall as the others around it, but wider, making it look like a mushroom. The tree branches didn’t start sprouting out of the thick trunk until about thirty feet up, unlike the smaller trees, which started at about fifteen.

“Hey!” He yelled at the tree, “Elien!”

“What?” A female voice called, sounding irritated.

“Come here.” Reilly called, his voice not as loud this time.

There were footsteps up in the tree, sounding like someone walking on a hardwood floor, then silence.

“…” Reilly searched the large tree for any sign of movement.

Then, from the high-up branches, a girl with brown hair appeared, hanging upside-down. “Oh! Reilly! Hi.” She said, smiling. She looked about seventeen, a necklace with a tooth of some sort hanging down in her face.

She disappeared back into the tree and then reappeared as she slid down the trunk, jumping to the ground ten feet from the grass and stumbling to a stop. “What’s up?” she asked.

“I know how to get Skie back.” He said.

“…Reilly, this again?” Elien sighed, but she didn’t sound annoyed, “Look, she’s dead. Okay?”

“I know, I know! But…but what about the other world?” he asked.

Elien raised an eyebrow, “Other world? What?”

“The one…the one that we heard Jake talking about. He said he knows how to get there right?”

“I still don’t know where this is going.”

“That’s because you’re slow, Elien.” Arenah laughed, stepping into the large clearing with Jeriesh walking next to her.

Elien stuck her tongue out at Arenah, “Shut up,” She said.

“Jake said something about when someone dies in this world, they are reborn in the other one.” Reilly continued.

“She’ll only be a month old then if she was born the instant she died here.” Arenah said.

“Not exactly…you see, if one of us goes there, we’d most likely subconsciously alter the time stream, so when we’d find her, she’d be the exact same age as when we last saw her.” Jeriesh said.

Elien crossed her arms, mumbling something about Jeriesh being a know-it-all.

“So let’s go!” Reilly said, hope lining his voice.

“Sure, I’m up for it. I miss Skie as much as you do, when do we leave?” Arenah asked.

One problem.” Jeriesh piped up loudly.

“What?” Reilly said.

Jake has the portal. Jake is our enemy, therefore-”

“We steal it from him!” Elien grinned, liking the idea.

“I was going to say make a deal with him…but…”

“But we are thieves. I like that idea.” Arenah grinned.

“I’ll go and get it. You guys go find Jek, we’ll probably need him. And Julia. Get Julia too,” Reilly said, turning around, but was stopped by Arenah’s hand on his shoulder.

“Oh no you don’t. Elien will get it and we’ll find Jek. But not Julia, she went off to lead a raid on Talirek a while ago. She won’t be back until sundown at least.”

“…WHAT?!” Elien yelled angrily, but only Jeriesh flinched. “Why do I have to go?” she demanded.

“Because you’re the only one Jake’ll listen too without demanding we hand Jeriesh over,” Arenah stated. The dragon’s tail swished back and forth in the grass.

“He’s not supposed to listen! We’re supposed to steal it!” Elien said.

“Then go steal it.” Arenah waved her hand towards the woods.

Elien growled, then crossed her arms and pouted, “Fine, fine. I’ll go. But only if I get to lead the next raid.” Elien said.

Arenah sighed, “Alright…”

“Good, now go on.” Elien waved them off before running into the woods, knowing exactly where she was going.

And Arenah, Reilly, and Jeriesh split up to find Jek.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Elien looked down at the large clearing down below, deciding to be intelligently obvious by standing on the one and only branch that stretched over it, all the other branches had been cut to let the sunlight in.

Large and small tents scattered the clearing, all of them looking a bit worn and used up. A large campfire pit was dug out in the center of the clearing, several large logs circling it.

Her eyes stopped at the largest tent, which had a large pile of firewood on one side, and a bunch of barrels stacked up on the other. It had wooden frames around it, giving it a square shape instead of a triangle one.

“There you are…” she whispered.

Her eyes widened, did she just say something out loud? Here? The place that was supposedly filled with archers and footmen, too bored to do anything else but guard their campsite from anything from a chipmunk to a squirrel or even a rabbit.

She waited for someone to jump down from the branches above her and laugh triumphantly at his find, but no one came.

“Security sucks today, I see,” Elien sighed. She felt relieved, but a little disappointed that she wasn’t going to get challenged to a fight. That’s what usually happened around here, until the idiot who challenged her boss shows up.

“Aha!” A voice shouted from above.

Elien almost felt like cheering after hearing her cover was blown.

An arrow whizzed by in front of her. A warning shot, only.

She fell backwards, “Ack!” she sat back on the foot-wide branch and looked up, seeing several men wearing scale male armor step out of their cover, all of them pointing arrows at her, every single one of them looking smug.

“Hello, boys!” Elien said, standing up and cracking her knuckles, “Who’s gonna fight me today?”

“He is,” a man with light brown hair said from right above her.

She glanced up, seeing him shove someone who was standing right next to him off the branch. The guy screamed, landing on the branch Elien was on and making it bounce up and down.

While he clung on for dear life and waited for it to stop moving, Elien just crossed her arms and raised an amused eyebrow.

After the branch was done shaking, the young man jumped to his feet, drawing a thin sword. He had bright red hair, and also had scale male armor on, like everyone else. He grinned, “I-I will!” he sounding a bit unsure of himself, even though he looked ready enough to take on a dragon three times the size of Jeriesh.

Elien put her hand on her belt, then froze and went rigid, “Where’s my sword?” she asked herself, looking down at her hip. “Aw, nice time to leave it in the stupid fort!” she yelled angrily, stomping her foot and making the branch quiver again.

The young man almost lost his balance, but regained it quickly, “You’re either going to fight me and win your freedom back, or we all take you in now and wait for the boss to come back from Talirek,” He laughed, “And just to let you know, a girl is no match for me,”

Elien, who had been paying more attention to the color of his hair than what he was saying, stopped, “What was that?” she said acidly, her glare making him freeze.

“You makin’ fun of me? Think I’m not tough enough for you?” the obviously seething Elien started advancing.

“Oh crud, she’s mad, let’s get the newbie out of there,” a blonde-haired archer said to the darker-haired man next to him.

The dark-haired archer grinned, “Better yet, let’s catch her, tie her up, and tell the boss the new guy did it,”

“Good plan, Redge,” the blonde said, and the two slapped high fives.

Redge waved his hand in the air, getting everyone’s attention, except Elien and her insulter, who had almost backed up to the edge of the branch and was almost to the point of slipping off.

Redge twirled his index finger in a circle, then pointed at Elien. Everyone nodded in response, and moved in silently, not wanting to distract her and bring her rage upon themselves.

“I didn’t mean it! Don’t hurt me!” The red haired archer yelled, pointing his sword at her, “Don’t come any closer! I’m warning you, you demon-girl!”

“WHAT? Awright, that’s IT!” She leapt forward, making the archer shriek, but she was stopped by two people grabbing both her arms, holding her back. “Wanna fight? I’LL TAKE YOU ALL ON!” she roared.

“Calm down! Calm down!” The two men restraining her yelled.

“If I had my sword, you’d all be in so much pain right now!”

And boy, did they know it.

Four other men came down and helped keep Elien still as another came back up with a long length of rope, tying her up tight enough to make her look like a mummy, and it was impossible for her to move.

“I’m so gonna turn each and everyone of you into little smears in the grass! You hear me?!” she shouted.

“Hey, since you almost got your butt kicked, you can take the credit for her capture,” Redge told the red-haired archer, who started beaming.

“Really?” he said.

“Really,” Redge said, “Yeah, tell Jake we had nothing to do with it, you get all the credit. Every last ounce,” then, as if on signal, all men in the area except for the new guy ran off to their tents.

Elien surprisingly stayed silent, but still looked completely ticked off.

“Alrighty boys, I’m back!” A voice called from the back of the large tent, which was behind Elien, who could do nothing but lean against a large wooden pole in the ground that had lots of rope tied around it and stretched to other poles around the campsite, acting as clotheslines. “John, Al, and Kay, I got you new swords since you broke yours last week. And Redge? I got you a new bow.”

“Oh! Boss! I caught one of the thieves! All by myself and everything!” The archer said excitedly, running passed Elien and to the other side of the tent.

“Really? Which one? Is it the dragon rider? Or that Jek character?”

Elien sighed, Here he comes, she thought, annoyed.

The excited archer, and Jake stepped in front of her. Jake looked maybe a year older than her at the most and had bushy black hair, and a wide gray cloth headband keeping most of his bangs out of his face. There was a bright orange and red feather sticking out of the left side of the headband. He was dressed like the rest of them, scale male armor, and black baggy pants. He had a thick pair of black boots on, and a sword strapped to his back.

The happy expression on his face vanished when he laid eyes on her. “Elien?” he said, a bit on the awestruck side.

“Who do you think it is?” she barked.

“Pretty good huh? She was pretty hard to catch too…” the archer grinned, obviously proud of himself.

Jake turned his head to face his archer, his eyes narrowed. “You did this?” he growled.

“Y-yes…?” the archer said slowly, taken by surprise by Jake’s sudden angry expression. Wasn’t he just excited that one of the thieves was captured?

“You are the one who tied my Elien up?” he sounded venomous.

Your Elien?” The archer and Elien yelled at the same time, although the archer sounded frightened, and Elien sounded angry.

“But, I didn’t! It was-“ the archer was cut off by Jake’s fist connecting with his jaw.

“Never touch my Elien! You hear me?!” Jake roared, tackling the archer and beating him into the dirt.

Elien on the other hand, was trying to get free so she could grab the magical-whatever-it-was and get out of there before Jake turned his attention back to her again.

From every tent, both archers and footmen were peeking out of the openings, watching the fight with wide grins on their faces, enjoying the show as their slightly over-protective captain pummeled the living daylights out of the new, and a little arrogant, archer.

Elien was gnawing on the rope around her shoulders when Jake and the archer finished their fight.

“You’re new here, so I’ll forgive you this one time,” Jake said, helping the archer up, “But never do that ever again,”

- - - - - - - - - - - -

The black-eyed archer only nodded before stumbling off to one of the tents. He opened up the tent flap, looking around as his five ‘roomies’, who seemed to all be preoccupied with something that usually wouldn’t amuse them.

“I hate all of you,” the archer said, sounding funny since his cheek was slightly swollen.

“Aw, don’t take it like that!” a young man with dark skin said, grinning, “Think of that as your initiation!”

“Yeah, I had to go through that too, only I never got around to capturing Elien. We only can capture her when she forgets her sword, which is pretty seldom.” Said a blond footman with large metal shoulder pads.

“Welcome to the club, Gene,” another redhead laughed, slapping the archer on the back.

“Oww…” the newly initiated archer toppled over, out cold.

“Heh…oops…”

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Jake twirled around so he was facing Elien, “Elien! I’m so happy to see you!” he grinned happily. He drew the sword from the sheath strapped to his back and smiled at her, “Don’t move, I’m gonna cut you free, ‘kay?” he grinned and swung the sword upward in one fluid motion, and the ropes broke apart around her, Elien herself unscathed.

“Show off…” Elien mumbled, brushing herself off. The girl was taken by surprise as the was swept into a hug that pinned her arms to her sides. “Ack! Leggo!” she yelled.

“I missed you soo much!” Jake said happily, spinning around.

Any and all of his archers and footmen that were watching snickered.

“I said, put me down you stupid prince-charming-look-alike!” She yelled.

Jake put her down, kissing her on the cheek gently.

The footmen and archers once again snickered, a little louder this time.

The now furiously blushing Elien shrieked and punched him in the gut so he fell to his knees in front of her, “Creep! I don’t like you, got that?!” She yelled angrily before stalking off.

Jake grinned after her, “Come back soon, my love!” he called, waving.

The archers and footmen almost fell over laughing.

“QUIET!” Jake barked, and his ‘employees’ disappeared back into their tents.

“Oh crud…I forgot…” Elien turned around, not happy with this at all, and marched back into the clearing.

“Elien! You’re back! Are you here to finally admit that you are madly in love with me?” Jake grinned, “Because I’m madly in love with you!” he sang, prancing over to her.

“No, I’m not!” She yelled, but Jake didn’t look at all fazed. “I came here to steal some magical object you’re supposed to have, that can allow you to travel to the other world? You know?”

Jake thought for a moment, “Oh! That! Okay, but you don’t have to steal it! I’ll save you the trouble and give it to you!”

“I’d rather steal it…”

“Call it whatever you want,” he said happily, then ran into his large square tent to get whatever it is could transport Elien and her friends to Skie. When he came back out, he handed the item over to her.

“…How do you use it? Are you sure this is it?” She said, looking at the so called ‘magical’ object.

“Yup. Positive that’s it. It‘s actually supposed to be from the world you‘re traveling too. But…I don’t know how to use it! I’m sorry! I’ve disappointed you!” He bawled.

“Oh, cut it out!” Elien said as Jake hugged her again like she was a stuffed animal.

“Sorry, sorry,” he said, suddenly his cheerful self again. “Now that you have it, does that mean you’ll be leaving again?”

“Heck yes. Bye,” she said, turning around and walking off back into the forest towards her friends.

“Goodbye my love! Come back and steal from me any time you want!” He waved again after her, then turned around and crossed his arms, “ALRIGHT ALL OF YOU!” he roared, “OUT HERE NOW!”

All of the footmen and archers slowly stepped out of their tents, standing in front of him in one large half circle like a bunch of toddlers caught stealing cookies from the cookie jar after bed time.

“I know that the new guy could not handle catching Elien by himself! As punishment, you all will run from here to Talirek and back!” Jake ordered. “No breaks!”

“But, but that’s all the way at the edge of the forest! It will take all day just to get there!” a man with brassy colored hair said.

Jake stepped in front of him so their faces were just inches apart, “Better start moving then, huh?” he said, grinning. Then turned around and headed for his tent, “Start!” he barked, and all of his men groaned in annoyance as they all started running down a barely visable dirt trail through the forest.

“Ha, ha! You’re all getting punished also!” the new archer laughed pitifully.

A man with dark skin who was running alongside him ‘accidentally’ tripped him, then laughed, speeding up a bit to catch up with the leading part of the group.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Reilly had been the one who found Jek.

Jek was a nineteen-year-old with long, spiky dark brown hair that reached his scruffy chin. He was sleeping up high in a tree, and Reilly was nice enough to climb up silently and yell in his ear to wake him.

The four of them waited at their tree for a couple minutes when Elien showed up, out of breath but with an item resembling a stick. In fact, it was a stick.

“What’s with the twig?” Jek asked, crossing his arms and looking at Elien quizzically.

“Well, this is it. Jake said that this is it. But he didn’t know how to work it…”

Arenah raised an eyebrow, “He told you what it was? So you didn’t steal it?”

“Of course I did! I just asked how the stupid thing worked, but he didn’t know, so I just came right here,” Elien said.

Jek rolled his eyes, “How do we know it’s even real then?”

Elien ignored him, then waved it around like a sword, “Abra cadabra!” she yelled.

Nothing happened.

“Hmm. Must be broken.” Elien said, shrugging.

Reilly walked up to her and took it out of her hand, “Let me try something,” he said.

Elien didn’t protest, and took a step back.

Reilly looked the stick over, trying to find anything abnormal or strange on the stick. But no, it was a regular looking piece of wood. He tossed it from hand to hand before holding it out in front of him, like a wand. He started drawing a circle, a large oval as big as he was, then pulled the wand back.

The oval he drew flashed in the air, then slowly shimmered until what looked like a painting hanging in mid-air appeared. It looked like a window. And the window opened up into a whole new world.

Everyone stepped next to Reilly, looking surprised and awestruck.

“How did you do that?” Arenah asked, “I mean, how did you know what to do?”

“No clue.” Reilly shrugged, “Can we go now?” he asked, sounding like a little kid anticipating a trip to the movies and his parents can’t find the car keys.

“Ooo!” Elien grinned, putting her arm in and out of the portal.

“You’re such a little kid, Elien.” Arenah sighed.

“So?” Elien stuck her tongue out.

“So, let’s, GO!” Reilly shoved Jek and Arenah through the portal, where they both stumbled onto the grass.

Arenah tripped and tumbled towards the ground, but was caught in the arms of Jek. He blushed furiously and helped her back, shoving his hands in his pockets and looking away, his jaw locked tightly.

“…Em…thank you?” Arenah said.

Elien stepped into the portal and elbowed Jek playfully, “Hey, hey! I saw that! I know that look!” She grinned. She looked at Arenah and winked, making Arenah blush and look away also.

Reilly rolled his eyes and stepped through, “Stop flirting, dang it. Let’s just find Skie, ok?” Reilly said.

Elien looked around. They were in the middle of a forest, but the trees weren’t even half the size of the ones from their world. And the air smelled funny. She climbed up one of the pine trees and looked around from the top, seeing the tops of some strange looking buildings, and a small black road close by seeming to lead to it.

She dropped down and crossed her arms, “How the heck are we supposed to find Skie in this place?” she said.

Reilly froze suddenly, a confused and strange expression crossing his face.

Jeriesh stepped out next, “What is it?” he asked, concerned.

“I…I know where Skie is.” Reilly said.

“What?” Elien asked, “You do? How?”

Jek and Arenah were too busy trying to not blush.

“I don’t know…I can just feel her. She’s…”

“Who’s where?” Jek and Arenah asked at the same time, then blushed again.

Jeriesh sighed dramatically, “Skie. He thinks he knows where Skie is.”

“Oh.” Arenah said, grinning, “Well, where is she then?”

The boy grinned “Don’t worry guys! I know exactly where Skie is!”
