I Remember

I remember a time when we saw an ant we didn’t think to kill it,

We thought it was amazing.

I remember a time when we played in the sandbox till it got dark.

We’d go on adventures to the hot desert or that deserted island.

We didn’t think we’d ever have to grow up.

I remember a time when I used to wrestle with my father.

He’d pick me up over his head

And gently toss me onto the bed,

Where I’d giggle and say, “Throw me again daddy!”

I remember when my mom would take me to the store and tell me no when I asked for sweets.

She always gave in however.

I remember when school wasn’t a bad place to go.

Everyone liked each other and played together.

No one was popular, or better than another.

The teachers were nice and always had games for us to play.

I remember when my grandfather would pick me up and place me into his wheelbarrow.

He’d cart me around and I thought I was the queen.

Am I still the queen Grandpa?

Am I still perfect in your eyes Daddy?

Am I the most beautiful girl Mommy?

I remember when I had lost my stuffed bear and would call out, “Daddy!”

You would come running.

“I lost my bear!” I’d cry.

You’d find him.

Right under the bed you’d find him.

“Here you go Doll Baby.” You’d say as you tucked me into bed again.

I remember when I didn’t know of death.

I thought life wasn’t sad.

I remember when there was no poverty, pain, or suffering.

Everyone was happy when I was young.

Now everything has changed.

Grandpa is gone now,

I’m too big to wrestle with now,

I have to pay for my own sweets now,

School is harder now and

People are meaner now.

Teachers don’t trust us anymore.

If I lose my stuffed bear, I can’t call to daddy anymore.

He’s too busy to worry about an old bear.

I have to find that bear myself now.

Death scares me now.

I see people in pain, hear about poverty, and know that everyone is suffering.

No one is happy anymore.

So do you remember when you were young?

Don’t forget those memories,

For those were the moments in your life you will always wish you had back.
