The cool autumn breeze blew my hair as I stood on the balcony of my father's castle. The sun was beginning to set and the sky was slowly turning. I took a deep breath of the cool air and let it feel my lungs. I was in complete bliss. That was until the door to the balcony burst open and through the doorway came my capture.
He was a man that looked to be in his early twenties. He wore a suit of armor and carried with him a sword. I opened my mouth to scream but was quickly silence by a sharp blow to the head by the end of his sword. My world went black and the last thing I saw was the mans face as he bent over my frail frame and whispered,
"You will be my princess and I shall be your prince."
I awoke in a room that was lavishly decorated in gold and red. Tapestries hung from the walls and dark colored drapes hung at the sides of the windows that were now letting in sunlight. As I looked around the room I noticed that I was in a rather large bed with red and gold blankets and silk red sheets. I was not dressed in my soft blue dress that I had been wearing before, instead I was dressed in a fine silk light pink nightgown that went down to my feet. Remembering what had happened to me I sat straight up in this bed that did not belong to me and let out an ear piercing scream.
A woman that looked to be in her late forties rushed in looking rather flustered.
"My lady, what troubles you?"
"Where am I?" I asked pulling the covers closer to me as if they would protect me from anything that might try to harm me.
"You are in Prince Calvin's castle my lady."
"WHAT! WHY! Why have I been brought here?" I asked becoming frightened of what was to become of me.
"Why you are here because you are going to be the Prince's bride."
That word… bride. It echoed through my head as I began to feel faint and I sunk back on to my pillows with that word still ringing in my head.
The next thing I remember was waking up to the same man that had captured leaning over the bed and looking at me. I let a small gasp escape my lips as I clutched the blankets and backed as far away from this man as possible. At first he looked taken aback but he quickly regained his composure.
"Princess, It pleases me that you have awoken."
"Who are you?" I questioned.
"I am Prince Calvin of Earenwood." He stated proudly as he puffed out his chest that was covered in fine red cloth with gold trimming. He wore a pair of tan colored pants, and a pair of dark brown leather riding boots. Tied to his side was a sheath that contained his sword.
Earenwood? Where have I heard that before?
"Why have you brought me to this place?"
"Now now. I answered your question I believe that you should answer one of mine." He stated.
You remained silent and waited for him to speak.
"Well since I already know your name, then I would like to know what is your age?"
"I am 16 years. Wait how do you know my name, I have not told you?"
"I have my ways of knowing." He said as he gave you a cocky smirk.
"You are Princess Elizabeth of Silverton." He stated.
"I have answered your question now I believe it is my turn to ask you one."
"What is your age?"
"I am 19 years."
I gave a curt nod as to tell him that he may proceed with his next question.
"Do you know why you are here?" He asked with an unreadable look on his face.
"I…I.. can't recall. I am certain someone told me though."
I couldn't remember, everything was foggy and I couldn't bring myself to make sense of any of it.
"You have been brought here to be my bride." He stated simply with a smirk.
"NO! I will not marry you! My father will come and save me!" I shrieked with fright.
"You will marry me and your father will not come to rescue you because he signed a marriage contract giving you to me." He said his voice rising.
"H..he would never do such a thing." I stammered in disbelief.
"He has and you will become my wife and bear me a son who will be heir to the throne once I have passed on."
"W.Wh.Why has he done this?" You asked, as your eyes became misty with tears.
"At your birth he signed this contract."
"Then why did you attack me?"
"Your father was beginning to doubt his decision and my time to inherit the throne draws close as my father has grown sick. His wish is to see me married and it will be fulfilled." He stated.
"So I am to live here and marry a man I do not know and do not love."
At this statement he became enraged.
"YOU WILL LOVE ME!" He yelled as he came closer to where I rested.
I drew back in fear of being struck by him. He stopped and bent down so his face was almost touching mine.
"Do not fear me." He whispered.
His voice was deep and it sent shivers down my spine.
"A maid will be sent in shortly to dress you and then you will accompany me to
Breakfast." He said as he placed a soft kiss on my hand, and walked out of the room.
Shortly after he had left the same woman as before entered the chamber holding an emerald green dress that had been made out of velvet in her hands.
"Well it's nice to see you up miss! Oh please forgive my manners! My name is Trudy."
"Hello, my name is Elizabeth."
"Well Elizabeth we must get you dressed for the prince! Come come!"
Trudy was a rather plump woman that had wispy brown hair tied into a bun. Her hazel eyes seemed to sparkle with everything she did. She wore a simple light brown dress with a dull white apron that huuged her body. When she smiled her eyes grew small and her cheeks plump.
I carefully climbed out of the bed your feet resting on the soft red carpet. Trudy walked over to you and undid your nightgown and replaced it with the emerald green one. The dress fit me perfectly as it had been made just for me. Its long sleeves gracefully lined my slim arms and the simple emerald broach gather the material in the middle showing some of my chest. I was not comfortable with the neckline of this dress but had no other choice. Trudy produced a pair of green silk slippers and put them on my small feet. She next brushed out my long dark brown hair and let it flow softly around my shoulders.
"You look absolutely beautiful!" She exclaimed as she looked at my reflection in the mirror.
I too stared into the mirror. I saw a beautiful girl, with her hair perfectly done, her deep brown eyes were shaped like large almonds and her small dainty pink lips formed a delicate line. This girl that was looking back at me from the mirror was me, but it also was not me. I would no longer be the quiet soft-spoken princess. I would not marry this prince Calvin, not without a fight.
"Come now Miss Elizabeth! We mustn't keep Prince Calvin waiting." She said as she grabbed my hand and led me out the door of my chamber and into the stone passageway.
She led me down a long hallway with light gray stone walls, that were brightly lit by gas lamps every three feet or so. I could feel the coldness of the hard wooden floor through my slippers. Reaching the end of the hallway we descended down a flight of stone stairs and into the main hall that was lavishly decorated in Red and Gold. Trudy led me down yet another hallway and stopped in front of a pair of massive oak doors.
"This is the dining hall Miss Elizabeth." She stated as she opened the doors and ushered me into the enormous room.
In the center of the room sat a long dark oak table with what seemed to be twenty or so chairs. Sitting at the head of the table was Prince Calvin. He smiled as I entered the room and Trudy led me to the seat to the right of him. She pulled out my chair and waited for me to sit down. I hesitated for a second and then sat down smoothing out my gown. Trudy gave a small curtsy and then left the room and myself alone with Prince Calvin.
"Is the gown to your liking?" He questioned me.
"Yes. It is fine. "I replied as I glanced around the room so to avoid his gaze.
"Good. I have already ordered that many more shall be made. You will find them in your chambers later on."
"Thank you." I said looking down at my pale hands that were delicately folded in my lap.
"Why will you not look at me?" This question surprised me.
I did not reply but instead I continued to look around the room as though I had not heard the question at all.
"Elizabeth, look at me." He commanded in a cold, emotionless voice.
I slowly turned to face him and brought my eyes up to meet his. His eyes were unlike any color I had ever seen before. They wear a deep green almost emerald colored but they had tiny flecks of gold scattered throughout them making them shine in the light.
"You must learn to obey me. I will not have my wife disobey me. Do you understand?"
I gave a small nod of my head before I returned my gaze back to the table.
"Good. You will make an wonderful bride and a great Queen."
At this statement my head shot up, no longer caring about avoiding his hypnotizing gaze.
"I..I.. Cannot be Queen!"
"You will be Queen! You will be my Queen!"
I once again lowered my head in defeat. I was quickly learning that he had a quick temper and I did not want to anger him further. I had never wanted to be Queen. Not even of my own Kingdom. I had never wanted any of the power, nor to be married off so as to have a King. I never wanted to be the one that led the entire Kingdom.
For the remainder of the meal the two of us sat in silence as I quietly picked at my food. At the end of the meal he stood up from his chair and silently walked towards me and pulled my chair back allowing me to get up. He gave a small nod of his head signaling that he wanted me to follow him and I did. He led me down a short corridor and under a stone archway. We were now outside in the courtyard. It was amazing! The high stone walls were covered in green ivy that snaked upward as though it was trying to reach the heavens. Everywhere I turned I saw roses. Pink red, yellow, and white. I took in a deep breath of the cool fresh air and the scent of roses filled me.
"Does this please you?" He questioned me.
"It is lovely." I replied as I once again dropped my gaze to the floor.
"Why do you always gaze at the ground?" He asked confused with my antics.
"I do not know." I replied in a whisper.
I felt the touch of his soft fingertips on my chin as he raised my face from the ground and stared into my eyes. For a moment there was absolute silence. Neither of us spoke a single word.
"Someone so beautiful should not hide their face from the world." He said barely above a whisper but loud enough so I could hear him.
I did not no how to respond so I answered him with the only thing I could, with anger and spite.
"Someone so cold and uncaring should not force another to marry against their will."
With this I turned around and walked back through the corridors trying to find the chamber I had first awoken in. After wandering around aimlessly I finally stumbled upon my chamber. I crawled under the warm covers and closed my eyes, wishing that when I would awake that I would not awake in the same room, but in my own back at my fathers castle to discover this had all be a very bad dream.
