So-Called Reality

You were in my dream last night.
I don’t know why, exactly
—especially after I let you down.

In my dream, we got along just fine
And all we needed was each other.
Sure, some things didn’t quite mesh with reality
—but that’s why it’s a dream.

In my dream, we were equals
Helping each other out,
Never bossing the other around
—and it was all just a dream.

In reality, we barely know each other.
But even so, I respect you
And I try to be a person that you would respect.

In reality, you’re hurting
And even though we’re hardly friends,
I want to help you.

I’ve never approached you on the subject
And I don’t know how long it will be until I do.
But I do know the reason behind it—

Deep down,
In the depths of my soul,
Behind the lies,
Underneath the broken trust
—I love you.
