Even if I Scream

My public speaking

Is weak

I can’t seem to get

My ideas across

Aloud

My life is

Completely in letters

Why am I so

Chained to them?

When in the course

Of human events…

We hold these truths

To be self evident…

We mutually pledge

to each other

Our lives

our Fortunes and

Our Sacred Honor

I would never be

Able to get this across

By speaking

My writing, eloquent

My speech, clumsy

Somehow the two

Do not connect

“Please,” I say quietly

“Take this to the press

“They’ll print it in newspapers

“So the nation

“Will know what I have to say.”

that all men are created equal

That they are endowed by their creator

With certain unalienable rights…

I want my thoughts to be

known

I don’t want

My people

To be

Crushed under this tyrant

Forever.

“I cannot give my address

“In person,” I mumble.

“No one will

“Find it interesting if

“I say it. Perhaps if I write

“To the people they will

“Understand.”

Whenever I speak

It doesn’t sound right

It doesn’t come out

The way I hear it

What is wrong

With me?

that among these are

Life, Liberty and

The Pursuit of Happiness.

That’s what I wanted

To say.

I want these words

These letters

The ones that bind me

To free my people.

“I know I cannot

“Effectively give my

“Address orally,” I mutter.

“But the Strength

“Of one’s voice

“Does not change

“The Strength of one’s message.”

This is how to be free

This is how to be equal

This is how to declare your

Independence

I want them to read it.

I want my people

To hear me.

I want them

To understand.

Please read this.

Please read this.

Please read this.

Because even if I scream

Even if I SCREAM

No one will hear me.

For these letters that chain me

Happen to be

My freedom

These letters are

The only way

For me

To express myself

This is a poem for my English class-- it's a response to the Declaration of Independence. It's from Thomas Jefferson's POV. ;P Leave me comments!! Thanks for reading.
