The Soldier's Last Shot
You're lucky to breath at the end
You were lucky to have lived at all
No injuries or other maladies
You came back from war
And parties galore celebrated your return
Yet there you lie
With blood pouring from your head
Where a little piece of lead
Ended everyone's joy and happiness
The cold gray steel still in your lifeless hand
So now instead of wearing party hats
And singing our thanks and praise to God
Our eyes are red and we're clad in black
And praying to God you'll see pearly gates
We thought the worst was over
When peace was called and you were safe
Yet we did not foresee the horrors
Of what came after the last gunshot
For after the treaty was signed
And you were home safe and sound
Another gunshot rang loud and true
As it took you away
We thought you were so very lucky
But we couldn't have been more wrong
