“Self-Absorption”

The bathroom is back there

She said

As she pointed with a finely manicured finger.

I followed with my eyes

And then

Stood up, knowing that I had to make my own way.

Her perfect pout was painted red;

I watched

It part to reveal a straight line of glossy white pearls.

Her wide expectant eyes

So bright

Under the fluorescent lights.

I began walking, whispering to myself

Don’t fall

You would only make a fool of yourself.

Rows of tired passengers, but none meet

My eyes

Each of them ahs his own concerns.

I can’t help but wonder what they might be

But then

I squeeze myself into the tiny bathroom and shut the door:

Occupied.
