Eyes
-michael hoblak
Eyes are the gateway to our souls. That instant, that briefest of moments, when two sets of eyes find each other and lock into an eternal connection, that second-long phenomenon that can seem to last forever, that is the key that unlocks the door. That chance catching of two strangers’ eyes, or the daily gazing of life-long lovers; in that moment, they become one, whoever they have been, are now, or will be. They can see your every sight, smell your every scent, hear your every sound, feel your every touch. They relive every moment of your life, and remember all of your memories, even the ones you yourself have long-since forgotten. They become you and you become them. And then the second passes and you both forget all you have come to learn – of life, of love, of each other. You both continue walking or sitting or talking or whatever it was you were doing as though nothing has happened, and you never again think of that one, most powerful instance; you both go on to share the exact same occurrence with other strangers, or loved ones, each time coming to a very different feeling for that smallest pocket of time, your eyes never again to meet in such a way.
Unless you both choose to look again. That’s what makes it more than chance, more than a strange happening or freak accident, more than a mystical mirage. That’s what makes it real.
