A/N: This was my entry for our Newspaper. They ave it once every few months or so. They put a picture in the Life section and you have to come up with a story that is no longer than 500 words...So I do apologize if I left stuff out. I am a very descriptive person in my writing...
-----------
"Grandma are you awake?" came the small voice.
"My little sapphire, come here." The elderly lady extended her wrinkly arms.
The little girl crawled on to the big bed. "What did you want?"
Her right hand reached over the nightstand. "This is for you."
"I love you, grandma." I kissed the picture.
"Sephira, come down for breakfast." called my mother.
"Coming." I placed my pendant around my neck and hurried down the stairs.
I watched as my mom placed the plate before me, but I pushed it away. "I'm not hungry."
"Are you okay?" she placed her hand on my forehead.
"I'm fine. Just not hungry." I said.
"My brother says it's going to rain hard. A thunderstorm." a girl said.
"Nuh-huh." another replied.
I smiled. "Rain is fine, but I love dark clouds." I stumbled a bit.
"Sephira." My best friend Ruby said. "Opal, get the teacher."
That was all I heard before my eyes closed.
I will admit I got sick after my grandma died. The doctor said it's an unknown illness, but my body hurts everyday. I ignore it the best I can, because I want to be normal. It's been like this for a month.
"Mmmm..." my eyes opened.
A sigh escaped my mother's mouth. "Thank heavens."
I sat up. "Where is my necklace?"
"I took it off." she turned around. "Here."
I grabbed it. My grandma gave it to me the day she died. I remember it well.
"Here, this is for you." she held a silver chain.
A silver butterfly adorned with sapphires and ruby stones in its wings. It was so beautiful. I held it in both hands just gazing at it.
"This has been in our family for so long... now it belongs to you." She touched my face. "Good-bye."
"Bye, grandma." I kissed her forehead.
"Take this." my mother gave me my medicine and a glass of water.
I put the butterfly pendant on and laid down. My mom turned on the nightlight. The pink light was peaceful, but as always I feel drowsy and they always appear.
Before I fall asleep I see two vikings. For some reason I'm not scared of them and when I awake they are gone. I figure they're part of my imagination.
My right hand clenches the butterfly pendant as my eyes close. Somehow I ended up in the era of vikings.
'How did I get here?' I thought.
This wasn't my world. The trees were more lovely than at home. The leaves were so beautiful as I sat up and saw they were there.
"I am Yorn and this is my brother, Bjorn." he said.
They looked the same as when I closed my eyes and as before I wasn't scared. Getting out of the bed I followed them. "Where are we going?"
"You'll see, princess." Bjorn spoke roughly.
'Princess.' Then it hit me, before me was a picture.
"Her soul was placed in you." Yorn said.
"Doctor." my mother said.
"I'm sorry. Sephira is dead." he told her.
"I wanted one more day, Sephira."
