Little Black Sheep
Written By:
Shadow “Kite” Kitsune
I’ve always been the black sheep, the oddball in the group. That may be what contributes to my acute reclusive tendencies. All my life I’ve been and felt different- in one way or another. My thoughts and beliefs always tend to be different from those of family or peers, and they always tend to get me a number of raised eyebrows. Is it so wrong to want to be different? No, it isn’t. And it isn’t wrong to think, feel, or believe anything different than what the general population does, either. The fact of the matter is, everyone thinks differently, some are just more individualistic than others.
The need tp ne your own unique individual is something everyone only hoped to achieve at some point in their lives. But by trying to do so, are you not just trying to be what everyone else wants you to be? Is it possible that we are influenced early in life to do, think, and believe everything that we’re told? Is that what shapes us into the people that we’re supposed to be? Well what is what we are is not what ‘society’ wants or accepts? Do we conform and try to become something, someone we’re not? No, because then we would only be fooling ourselves into believing we’re someone we’re not.
But therein lyes the problem. If we refuse to change, and choose to be who we are, is that not also conforming in some shape or form? We’re told all our lives to be ourselves, that if people don’t like us for who we are, then they’re not worth our time. But if who we are is what society and everyone else tells us, then who are we really? Are we not just another creations, another fabricated piece of the ever growing puzzle that is society, humanity?
The big question here is, simply, who are we really? If we’re nothing but a projection of what everyone else wants us to be, is there truly any such thing as individuality? Everyone is striving to find a place in this world, hoping to find somewhere to fit in. However, since everyone else is doing that same, the pockets in which one feels most comfortable tend to be with those who share their particular ideals and beliefs. But what happens when one’s ideals are shattered and destroyed? Do they not have to readjust and find somewhere else to settle?
We are all just stranger in this world, to each other. Nobody knows anyone as well as they believe they do- not even themselves. Therefore, it is wrong of me to think of myself an oddball, a black sheep, and individualist, because when all is said and done, and we all step back and take a good long look at one another in the mirror, aren’t we all just little black sheep trying to find a place to fit in in this world that just aren’t there?
